I knew a technical writer for electrical switchgear equipment in my first job. He died of a heart attack at age 40 due to the stress level of his job. It’s certainly not a job I’d ever want.

"Theory of operation"...so important. I think sometimes I get lazy with using a manual when, in all honesty, I don't thoroughly and completely understand the system in question. Makes all the difference....

I have a Haynes for my '02 Tacoma that I gotta dig up somewhere. Does Haynes provide detailed disassembly and reassembly of the engine block? Or should I look into getting one of these FSMs for my truck?
I got my engine currently half disassembled and thinking being a YT mechanic may not be enough to give me all the proper torque specs.

@shifty` I've seen in this forum that you know the 1st gen Tundra inside and out. How's your knowledge of the ins and outs of the 5VZ?

The 02 Haynes manual for my Tundra has exploded diagrams, torque specs and instructions however, personally, I don’t feel it’s detailed/complete enough to go by myself for every job. Maybe it’s better as a guide for those who do this type of work regularly and have pre-existing knowledge to fill in the blanks sometimes.

There's a 55 gallon drum of knowledge behind these trucks. I'm lucky if I have a quart between my ears.

I don't have the 5VZ or 1GR, so I don't know very much about them other than top-level basics on plugs, coils, and a few common issues. I had the 2GR in the 2012 Highlander we sold 2-3 years ago, which had a lot of similarities with the 1GR.

I think the FSM is a good buy regardless, but know you can find/download plenty online. Like, here's the 2003, which should be nearly identical to yours.

Thank you guys! I found my Haynes manual and skimmed thru it. It has a lot of info in there including the exploded diagrams like @Jack McCarthy stated. Only thing though is it covers Tacoma, 4runner, & T100 so that makes it a bit difficult to work with. I think between that and the '03 from @shifty` I think I'll be able to tackle this

    Much appreciated!

I am a bit intimidated by taking this further than what I already have done so far. Disassembly is easy enough but it's the reassembly that gots me a bit nervous. Have been thinking of taking it in to Yota1 and having them do it for me but I'm on a tight budget right now and have all the time in the world to do this myself so I'm on the DIY fence now about it.

Though i do own FSMs for a few different vehicles of mine, i find that they’re really only useful if you’re planning on going DEEP into swapping around wire harness conversions. Most everything else can easily be found online quick and easy.
