How close is too close? I had 17x9 +20 Fuel Shok wheels and 265/70 Falken Wildpeak AT3ws put on just last Friday and they look great but now the frt tires are like an 1/8th of an inch from the upper ball joints. The guys at Discount Tire where I bought them said this would not be a problem as the tires spin freely at full droop. I haven't had any rubbing anywhere yet but I don't feel good about this. Should I have gone with a -12 offset instead? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

+20 offset will push the wheel/tire closer in. -12 would help push it out more and you'll get more clearance. Once you go over a bump it might rub the inner part of the tire.

It doesn't matter how close they are as long as the tire spins freely along the suspension travel and from lock to lock. If it's rubbing on the upper control arm you'll see the marks and can address it then if needed.

I currently have 275/70R17 KO2s on 4Runner wheels (not sure on the backspacing) and the tire is pretty close to the upper control arm, but it doesn't run lock to lock and along the travel so all is good.

Can you take a picture looking down between the upper arm and the tire?

Youll be fine. As said above, if they dont hit under travel and lock/lock its will be fine.

The backspace on your current wheels is 5.79

The stock split spoke 17x7.5 wheels are +15 with a backspace of around 4.75

The TRD 16x7 snowflake wheels are also +15 with around 4.50-4.75 backspace.

Not a first gen guy here but have done alot of research on wheels lately. You could always run a very small spacer to help it but the -12 would have been a little better choice imo. But then may rub fender not to sure. I'm in that boat with my truck I'm going to get some 12 wide wheels before to long with -44 offset even with my lift I will have to do a body mount chop and some bumper shims. Roughly half my tire will be outside of fender.

I'm starting to feel better about now though.
BTW I just talked to the manager at Discount and reiterated my concern about the clearance and again he assured me that it was not a problem.
Apparently there's nothing that can be done as far as the wheels go but he said he might be able to work with me if I wanted to try and go to a smaller tire. Might try a 245/70 and see what it looks like.

Cool! I’m actually surprised that the company that sold you the wheels didn’t at least try and sell you the +1 offset. +20 works on a stock 2nd Gen tacoma because the upper arms and suspension geometry is different.

I went with the -12 offset and 285/75. I do hit the frame at full lock just slightly and had to trim the front bumper (have a high-clearance front bumper to replace so that won't be an issue)

See attached for an example. Sits well with the fender flares. Currently, 2.5" revtek spacer up front 1" block in back.

Oh yeah nice! Bronze wheels really look good with a white truck.
Well I took a few pictures and this one seems to show the gap between the tire and the ball joint the best. You can actually see the little rubber tits hitting the ball joint. And so far the only rubbing I have experienced is backing up at full lock to the left, the tire rubs the frame. Also at full lock turning to the left, the right tire rubs the inner frt fender wall slightly. I think I'm just gonna run with it as is and if something ends up going wrong I'll just deal with it. Thx to everyone for your help.

Personally, I would see if Discount would exchange them out first. Definitely too close for comfort.
