I'm just not sure how it would look painted vs stained.

The door is in pretty bad shape though. It has some pretty good cracks and warped.

From the pics, around the butt joints it looks like there’s some water damage. I’d remove the sweep and see what it looks like under there. That’s where most of your damage is probably going be.
You will need to remove the polyurethane or lacquer to get a good, even finish with the stain. If you use a gel stain, you can get away with just removing the damaged sealer coats but you’ll end up with a pretty dark stain.
Sanding and staining that whole door is a chore, especially around the damaged areas. It’s hard to say how those areas will turn out without seeing it in person. Damaged wood takes stain and polyurethane a little differently than solid wood, and it takes a little skill to get the stain evenly from damaged to undamaged wood.
If it’s in the sun that often, and gets snow damage, that polyurethane needs quite a few coats to be durable. Then all new weatherstripping would be a good idea since your door won’t fit the way it did before.

It may be too far gone from the water damage.

That's kinda what I was thinking. To repair, sand, stain the door properly it would take a few days for sure. I would need to do the inside as well since my German shepherd did some damage to it when someone was attempting to break in.

So I would have to bar the opening due to weather and animals. That wouldn't cost a huge amount, but still some sheets of plywood, 2x6's, and other supplies.

It looks like the door is knotty alder and if so, that is a bad wood to use for exterior use. I would sand it down, repair any damaged spots with wood hardener and wood filler and paint it.

I've had it about 3 years, it's solid as a rock. Nothing at a big box store will beat it

I've got similar sun/snow conditions as you and my door has taken a beating.
Mine is straight grain fir, 42"x7' and only 7 years old.
The wood is still good, but I really need to reseal it before winter.
I'm here for any recommendations. :hattip:

My Andersen quote came back for the 22 windows. 96,000.00

I also have a quote in with our local Sierra Pacific windows. We really like what they offer. Appreciate you sharing your time and expertise on this topic. :hattip:

I know right? I get that insurance is paying, but that is ridiculous. I just want my windows fixed, not prop up the US economy on the shoulders of my insurance company.

That's wild. I must have missed it, why is insurance covering your windows?

Hail damage. So far, with the loss of my wife's Subaru, tractor damage, roof replacement, etc...the cost is knocking on 225k.

My next home that we build will have some serious consideration with materials and design.

I'm not a huge window guy, and really don't like every single window to open. When these get replaced, I can see a lot of the casement windows being swapped to solid picture ones.

I dove into the front door today. Filled in a bunch of cracks, sanded, and will prime and paint tomorrow. Hopefully it turns out good. Just need to make it through this winter.

I bet that price was from Renewal By Andersen, notoriously high priced for a run of the mill wood fiber / vinyl window.

Yes it was Renewal by Andersen. I have already written them off. 96K dollars is around 4363.00 per window....and that is some pretty small bathroom/bedroom windows.

For that price it better come with a 2024 Tundra *and* a French maid or two to install them.

    A little update:

After attempting to contact Kolbe windows a few times, they directed us to a local business that is supposed to be the rep for them. Well, I'm not surprised that Kolbe windows are not popular around our hood. No return calls or attempts. We don't beg for contractors. Don't want the work...cool. Next.

Like in the earlier post, my Anderson window quote was 96K. My insurance approved it...but something has not been sitting right with us on our general contractor. So we did a test. We contacted Sierra Pacific local rep in Denver and had them get with our contractor to quote. Well my GC came back with a price of 78K and we still needed to do all interior work and the stucco. So after all that it would be in the mid 80's we are sure. I asked who the window installer was and if they have a business...etc. My GC was very reluctant to tell us who they use or the business name. We don't play that game and need to vet all contractors. Windows are a huge expense and we are not just going to let anyone with a plumb bob install them just to have a buttload of issues later.

We called the Sierra Pacific area rep and they sent one of their people out to measure and quote. They estimated (unofficially) around 50K turn key. That includes removing the stucco window pockets and replacing. Big price difference for the same windows.

The front door will be quoted by Sierra Pacific as well. We may look into going with a 8' door and just frame in the rest/rock the entry. 15-30K for a door/sidelights is ridiculous.
