Hello all.. first post here. I searched but couldn't find anything regarding this.

Bought my 2017 Inferno Tundra SR5 TRD DC back in October. I love it! Its been a long time saving and waiting and the day finally came. It has about 2000 miles on it now.. took a road trip down to Texas. But....

even before this trip i noticed a very faint popping noise in the front end. I notice it when the truck is cold and going at a slow speed (less than 15-20mph). sounds like popcorn popping. I hear it when i come to a stop and then when i let off the brakes to accelerate. Again, just at slow speeds. I also hear it backing up and going forward and when making sharp turns. This has been going on since new. I don't hear it as much once the truck has been driven awhile, but its still very faint. After a couple thousand miles now, the sound is still there and seems a bit louder, but not much.

Ive taken it back to the dealership twice and they can't seem to find anything wrong. They have greased and tightened everything. Taken off the skid plate up front and the sway bar and taken it for a test drive before and after. Still makes the noise. They have no clue. They also said they called toyota and they don't know either. Im pretty much at a dead end. They said to bring it back if it gets worse. Its super annoying to have a brand new truck doing this. Its not huge, but just disappointing.

    Any ideas or thoughts?

Is it only once, each time you start it up, right around the 15mph mark? If yes - thats the ABS running its check, and they all do it. Its especially noticeable if you lock your doors before you take off... since they autolock (in my truck) at the same speed as the ABS check and kind of drown it out.

no.. its less than 15 and it is a continuous sound; mostly when I'm going pretty slow. it happens especially when turning.. almost like a bad cv joint, but obviously thats not it. it does it every day and I've kind of gotten used to it, but damn its annoying.

Did the dealership rotate the tires? If they put the front ones onto the back and the noise goes away, could be a tire issue.

Popping noises in these trucks can be the lower control arm / alignment cam bolt being under torqued.

Maybe posting a video of the sound on here might help everyone. I crank the radio up as soon as I hope in the truck. I should prob listen to my truck more.

mine does this. low speeds when turning and going over bumps. def feels like front end. I keep telling myself its the RCI skidplate but i've been too lazy to take it off and check if the popping stops.

I’ll see if I can record a quick video in the morning when it’s at its worst. That may help a bit. Thanks all.

So why is it obvious that a CV joint not being bad? Because your truck is new?

This is in the drivetrain somewhere.

    What we know:

-turning at low speeds and low speeds forward and reverse.

    Tested:
    -skid plate off
    -greased u-joints/chassis.

    Problem still exists.

    Where to go from here:
I would be the bane of the service managers existance. That truck would be in weekly until repaired or start looking into lemon Law/ new vehicle replacement. Look into getting a loner vehicle.

    What could it be?

-is the sound from one side or the other? Front to back? Does this do it in 4wd?

    -rotational items it could be:
Front/rear differential, u-joint, cv-joint, transfer case, transmission, wheel bearing.

Since you said it definitely apparent during turns, is it worse turning left or right? The same?

Turning makes me wonder about cv shafts or front differential. Turning and the sound going away would make me suspect the wheel bearing. Maybe something is not fully engaging/disengaging in the 4wd system.

Bringing back an old thread. Did issue ever get resolved? My 2018 does this exact same thing. Its like the very first turn out of my driveway it does this. Turning left or right same issue both up front. If I come to a complete stop and turn sharply it does it also.

Mine does the same thing and I’m pretty sure it’s the body mounts. My 15 Tacoma also did it.

It’s most noticeable in the cold and when turning while the vehicle flexes over a bump.

I got my brand new Tundra 4x4 2018. It will do the same. Brought back to the dealer and the service manager had drove with me. He said it's normal as the ABS initiates to check. My previous Tundra 2006 4x2 doesn't have this problem. It does bother me a bite when ever I take off.

Any other solution for this would be very appreciated.

I would put it on jack stands and see if it replicate itself then. Uncertain how traction ctrl etc would behave with wheels suspended.
    IMO

My truck was doing the same when turning at slow speeds, 7" BDS lift. Sway bar links needed attention, changed my diff fluids helped a bit, replaced my steering rack bushings and the sound completely went away.

Mine does the same thing 2018 Tundra Limited! How could this be normal if you're hearing something sounds like loose underneath on a brand new vehicle?

I know that for myself and another member on here. We both have PROs and had the same popping noise at slow speeds. It turned out to be the skid plate missing a spacer. Not sure what other packages have the trd skid plate but if you do have one, I’d check that.

I removed my skid plate and still feel this popping on my steering wheel low speeds, stop and go traffic..happens randomly,,no idea what it is..
Edit: I actually feel it on my steering wheel no noise at all as far as I can tell.

I just had my skid plate fixed last week. My truck sounds normal for once. That’s weird if it’s not the skid plate. I’d go back to the dealer

Same issue here, took my skid plate down and put some foam rubber tape on the 2 areas that showed rub marks and the rear cross member, noise is gone!
