With the Ford the biggest problem so far is the transmission. Bring back the 6 speed. Unloaded its fine. Loaded it sucks. You wanna talk about some high trans temps when a transmission decides it doesn’t want to lock the torque converter and then it does want to lock it and back and forth. Oh and drive usually means go forward right? I’ve lost track how many times you put it in drive and give it throttle and it goes backwards. So now it’s drive. Foot hard on the brake with some throttle…tries to go forward…good ok let’s go.

I'm sure there are thousands of accidents where the individual is over payload but the majority are not ending up in civil court. Circumstance would have to be gross negligence like towing way over the GVWR and followed up with speeding and drunk driving. My point being the court system would be over loaded if TT owners were being dragged into a civil lawsuit for being a couple hundred pounds over GVWR.

....but what do I know but I did sleep at a Holiday in last night.

We need lawyer to comment on civil suit litigation.

Most RV and towing accidents don’t involve other vehicles (from the majority that I have seen), so ending up in criminal/civil court doesn’t happen a lot.

The friends that I will be allowing to tow my camper have done a metric buttload of research and did talk about some accidents involving not being able to stop and rear ending a vehicle. There was more damage done to the tow vehicle and camper.

Do you have the new 10 speed? I haven’t heard a whole lot of good things about it in the diesel/7.3/or GM built 10 speed “wannabe” Allison. I have heard of three local guys having major issues with the GM built 10 speed before 35k miles.

This does not give me a warm and fuzzy.

Today a friend had a new Ram with under 30k miles go into limp mode due to exhaust DPF issues.

When I leave CO and no longer need to drive over 10500 ft of elevation with 15+k lbs, I can totally see myself getting a gasser again. Hell, the Tundra is at the top of the list if the towing isn’t half of what it is now.

I’m not sure how heavy I would be willing to go on my HD gasser. I’m at about 7,500lbs loaded along with some extra stuff in the bed. Does fine on the hills if I have momentum but if I get stuck behind someone it isn’t easy accelerating up a hill. Not sure if I would be happy towing a 10k+ fifth wheel with it. Although I wonder how much it might help to regear from 3.73 to 4.30.

10-12k is no-mans land…so it seems. Here in CO, it would be a closer to 10K for sure or maybe even less. At my house the elevation is 7550’. So the gas powered guys would drop 91.2 crank HP from the get go.

A re-gear would help some when towing, but you would take a hit empty in the fuel mileage department. Fuel economy is not my first concern anyway to be honest. I purchased a truck to do work and make my life easier and do it safely.

I was at a silver wedding anniversary party this weekend for one of the wife’s co-workers that I have never met. They are from Corpus Christy, Texas. He has a 2016 GMC 2500 Denali and tows a large 5th wheel. I assumed he had a diesel. We started talking about how his truck would drag down pretty bad on the hills here in CO and how disappointed he was in the power. So I put my foot in the mouth and said “aren’t you glad you didn’t have a gasser? Then you would really have something to complain about!” He responded….”well that is the gas motor.” Lol. Oops.

All depends what you are towing. These two pics are about the same weight within 1000 lbs (TT 8200 / GN and tractor 9200 lbs) One tows a hell of a lot easier than the other.

This is interesting, I have 2020 F350 7.3 , 3.73 gear 10 speed an I haven't had any issues going on over 8k miles now. I love it. Makes towing so much less painfull then the Tundra 6 speed constantly having the engine winding out trying get anywhere, having to run in S4 ect . I'm not in the rocky's here but I haven't had any issues at all towing my 7-8k lb TT in the white mountains.. I have read that the new 10 speeds had some issues though from other folks, seems a bit hit or miss . Guess I got lucky so far..

I think they have a recall on that transmission on some of the years, yours may not be one of them. From the description of the recall its pretty extensive and requires them to open the transmission up to fix.

I was looking at the 7.3 earlier this year as well. I am trying to avoid big 3 issues and depreciation if I can help it.

Depreciation is not an issue with 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. I'm a multiline adjuster and can tell you from experience that they hold their value pretty darn good, now on a 1/2 big three truck its a different story

That is not my experience with 3/4 ton or 1 ton gas trucks, Diesels I would agree with you, but diesels come with their own set of issues that I really don't want to deal with unless the truck is making me money. Everything is holding its value now, go back a few years ago and look at HD gassers. Ram in particular compared to Toyota...any Toyota... If you run identical packages on Ram 1500/2500 gasser the depreciation on the 1500 is actually less

Right!....I'm gonna make something work with the Tundra, I have taken a bath before with a domestic truck and I won't do that again. I'm just waiting to see what the new tundra specs are before I decide on new Gen or old Gen. I haven't decided yet if I am going to trade the Tacoma I have now on it or just keep it and have both. I can make arguments for both ways.

Hopefully the new Tundra will address the payload issue so some of us don't have to go with a crap domestic. It's a big pill to swallow buying a unreliable but more towing capable domestic over the Tundra.

You can address payload with the current Tundra. Trailer design or modifications can do a whole bunch of stuff to tongue weight and trailer weight. Take a 30' steel Trailer and compare it to a 30' aluminum trailer for example. Take a 4' tongue and compare it to a 5.5' tongue, there are lots of options.

5 grand and fixed. Much cheaper than buying that 3/4 Ton. Not to mention, you can keep the truck you like and still pull more than enough trailer for your glamping expeditions if that's your thing.Screenshot_20210614-113804.jpg

I would think it is similar to backing doubles/triples. I know I'm not very good at it at all. The back trailer is all over the place when backing!

If it's like the one I saw you can lock the articulated portion. And its motorized so you can position a trailer without the vehicle.

Straighten it out, drop the pins to lock it, back up like normal. If me, I would still load 500-800 lbs on the truck rear axle to maintain good traction. Let's face it pushing or pulling any kind of weight with poor traction could lead to problems and the whole idea is to mitigate the problems.
