I am no expert at this and still remain confused about J2807. All I know is it is a standardized test that all the light duty truck manufacturers have accepted to use. There is no third party verification, so like fuel mileage ratings SAE accepts the manufacturers word on its tow ratings.

J2807 from what I can tell only pertains to towing ratings and GCWR. Has absolutely nothing to do with payload.

I have not ever got a clear answer to payload ratings. I have asked an attorney, several law enforcement, and a couple sheriffs of surrounding counties. Pretty much all have said it is real simple.... You can not go over the GVWR listed on sticker of vehicle. Our CRO (Chief Risk Officer) at work says same thing. GVWR is posted on truck and can not go over. He is in charge of all our fleet and managing our insurance/risk program with 30+ years experience.

I really think the 2 150 pound passengers is only in play with towing. There is not a 300 lb. buffer with GVWR. In other words, if payload is listed in door of Tundra as 1,280, you don't have an extra 300 pounds or can legally go up to 1,580.

You may have a driver that weighs 150 pounds or 400 pounds. That is and should be accountable in payload.

Again, I am no expert but if you ask enough people, law of averages of answers should apply and no 300 lb. buffer with payload.

Law enforcement can strongly suggest you shouldn't go over GVWR for obvious reasons but as far as enforcement unless you have a CDL and are driving professionally your not breaking any laws.

I agree not breaking any laws. Just the whole argument of your safety and the safety of anyone around you comes into play.

I have heard of litigation in courts with insurance denying claims, payouts, etc..... but ai would guess one would have to be pretty darn blatant and ridiculously over payload, but who knows.

From talking to our insurance agent, I would not want to chance it if I was ever in an accident.

That's why I commented that you should go over gvwr for obvious reasons. Your insurance will cover you for stupidity. They do it all the time for drunk drivers.

That doesn’t help with the Civil Lawsuits which are much more expensive than criminal. See my last post on “ask me how I know”

Does anyone know what the actual GAWR's are on the Toyota Axles? Does toyota make their own axles or are they built by someone else? For instance Ram Axles are made by AAM and the axles are de rated by Ram. The GAWR's are also limited by the tires, and wheel size. So for safety's sake, for example. The 2013 Ram 3500 has a 10,000 lb GAWR by AAM, which is 3000 more than the rating on the sticker by Ram, the caveat is that is with the stock tires and wheels when the truck was built. So if you know the actual GAWR by the Axle manufacturer you should be able to determine with the correct tires and wheels a safe threshold for weight.

Inside drivers door should have that information, unless you don’t already own a Tundra.

    Sticker should be like this:

    86CD1D57-EC86-4B27-BDB6-F743152365DB.jpg

so for my truck, 5600 front 7050 lbs rear. My GVWR is 11500 lbs but my axle rating is 12650 lbs. How can that be? Now let’s look at tires. My tires are rated at Load index 124 (3527 lbs each), so those are rated for 14,108 lbs. I’m good there. So it has to be my chassis limiting me from putting 4500 lbs in a single rear wheel truck bed.

100k would be nice. I’m trading modern diesels at 40-50k as the problems start all brands. I don’t gaf what brand it is. If it works and is reliable I want it….still on the search.

    Guess I’m 16000+ miles overdue.

Key to owning a diesel is not daily driving them, when they go into a regen you finish the regen before shutting down.

Before you pop off about emissions crap, I daily drove two diesels that were pre-DPF and the same results happened. In fact…sooner.

Diesels are made for work. Interesting on how many don’t actually need a diesel and very few actually need one.

If you don't tow heavy every day or often, you don't need a diesel, and are probably better off with a HD gas. Best thing that ever happened when I was shopping for an HD truck was a fleet manager friend of mine talked me out of a diesel.....

I don’t recommend diesels unless you tow heavy (12k or more) and that’s all you do with the truck. Mine sits in the garage unless snow today tow.

Agree. Except it’s hitched to a trailer and tows daily. And isn’t a daily driver except to get back to the jobsite if the trailer is left overnight. 16 years of doing this. Last truck that was worthy was a 2006 duramax…pre emissions. Imagine that!

For instance, I’m moved 96000 lbs of boulders last week from 76 miles away in mountain passes. That requires some pulling power.

The weight doesn't sound terrible but it looks longer than I'd be comfortable with in a halfton.

How in the “F” is that cost effective?!? You don’t have boulders more local. I have a pile of them if you want them. They don’t call NH the granite state for nothing! Ha

The weight was hardly an issue for the mighty Tundra. Wind resistance is what kicked its ass.

Very cost effective. I only spend 50-60.00 a day on fuel. Boulders around here and actually nice ones are 2-300 each. I’m getting them free. I also don’t have an excavator to load them up.

No that was soon to be a Chevy. Then the Chevy turned into a Ford. I have 0 brand loyalty. I just want to go to work and make $$. I can’t do that if truck is on wrecker or at a dealer.

Something is going on. Fords are pretty good. Most of my friends have them. One has over 210k miles on his stock 2011 without any major issues. Then again, another friend had the motor torn down at 15k and new front end at 25000 miles.

Watch out for the CP4s in the current diesels. I’m doing a CP3 conversion on mine soon enough.

    I’m not brand loyal either.
