Frame rusting mediation

I missed the factory recall for 2004 Tundra Frame so i been patching spots (rear spring etc) to keep going. Its not unsafe.I want to treat the frame to slow the progression and curious what you folks have done. I know, google it, but I like to read what end users of products have to say about using metal treatment products. BTW, 2004 Tundra SR5 3.4l @ 266,000 loves me! My first post.

 

Can you post pictures so we can a better feel for what you're dealing with? I use Fluid Film amd PB Surface Shield to protect my frame but you may need something extra.

Hey Jack. Looks like you did the POR-15 back in 2012, yes? How did it hold up?

Reason I ask is that I did mine about 4 years ago, and follow up each year with spray-on oil based treatment. To be perfectly honest, I'm really disappointed with the results -- in hindsight, I wish I hadn't done the POR-15. I should have just stuck with the annual coating. Now I have areas where the POR-15 is coming loose allowing rust to creap in. I'm able to control it with my annual (or sometimes twice annual if I get around to it) treatments. But in my experience, POR-15 was a lot of work for not much short term gain, and in the long term I actually think it did more harm than good.

Worth mentioning, Project Farm has done videos on both rust converters and rust prevention coatings. Both are solid videos. Sadly, Rust Bullet isn't seen in the rust conversion section.

After rebuilding my frame 3 years ago, I painted it with Chassis Saver and have done an annual cleaning and then spraying with Fluid Film Rust Inhibitor. It's worked so far...

It's held up really well but now really needs a touch up as it's flaked off in certain areas that have been either hit by rocks or exposed to sunlight (i.e. back of differential at either dawn or dusk).

My approach was to use a die grinder and 2-3" wire wheel to remove all loose rust, then treat with the solvent spray to remove grease residue then the metal etch solution they have and finally apply two coats of POR-15 in the semi-gloss black color. That shininess went away after it dried completely and now looks very much like the original frame itself.

It was a huge PIA to apply and I literally had to toss my clothes afterward and wear a hair cap to prevent the stuff from getting on my skin or hair working under the vehicle. It was worth it for all the years I didn't have to do more than a simple power wash to take off the excess salt.

 

Agreed. I only put it on a tiny section where the frame brace is and it took a long time. I think it would be so much better with the bed off.

 

It's almost imperative to remove the bed. Much easier to clean everything and access the bottom of the bed easily.

Completely different product. It doesn't look anything like Blaster once sprayed. I've got a few cans of this I've been using in addition to Fluid Film.

 

Blaster uses pretty much the same can styling for PB, Silicone, and Surface Shield products (at least)

 

Yeah, it's essentially PB Blaster's version of Fluid Film & Wool Wax. I have a few cans of it. I haven't compared it side by side with FF or WW, but others who have say it performs favorably.

 

I'd love to see Project Farm re-make their test with the top 4 treatments from the 1st video above, and compare it to the Blaster stuff...

 

I only started using Fluid Film and PB Blaster last year. I can’t comment on longer term results yet, but PB blaster was easier to apply and the solution seems to be a bit more substantial. I could see the PB much better than FF during the application. Perhaps a better cap on FF would have helped, not sure.

 

Not sure if they've changed the thingy on the top of the blaster or not. Btw that dude works for PB Blaster now. Not that that sways his tests, he made a video on that whole deal...I hope it works better with the stupid trigger add-on I have 1 of the 2 pack left. First was a total disaster with fluid film.
