I’m going to be mounting a winch and new bumper soon. I know on the FJ cruiser plates needed to be welded over the front crumple zones on the frame to avoid ripping the front end off when winching.
Is this something that’s needed on the Tundra?

Just a decent mount like a well made bumper or a concealed mount that bolts to the frame will do the trick. Scroll and search around on here there’s lots of guys with winches mounted

I’ll be installing the new Victory 4x4 bumper with winch mount.
I’m not worried about the bumper/mount strength itself, I’m concerned with the Tundra frame ripping at a crumple zone if it has any. The FJ, Taco, and 4 Runner will all rip a front end right off with regular winching due to the crumple zones. I had to weld reinforcement plates over them so we could use it for work all the time.

I went with SSO slim line. It’s a bit more than SDHQ but it’s also a bit beefier. But you do have to cut the plastic center part of the bumper to install it.

I know this is a relatively older thread, but I know what you mean about your concern with the frame’s strength and ability to handle winch forces, especially if having to winch from an angle. I don’t know the answer to that and am wondering if others who’ve used their winch have any experience to add.

I have no winch experience other than watching a few others use them on other vehicles. But I have more limited experience drilling, grinding, cutting and MIG welding on a few various frames, including welding on plates to strengthen the rear of a Tacoma frame. The thickest one I’ve worked on so far was a ‘93 fullsize Bronco. It was a pain to drill through with my cheap tools compared to other frames. But it still managed to bend right at the front crumple zone behind the frame horn when pulling out another fullsize badly stuck in the mud. So maybe someone with some Tundra winching experience can chime in? I’m also considering upgrading to a winch and bumper and would like to know more on our Tundra’s limitations in that respect and frame-strengthening steps, if any, that have been or should be taken.

I have a camburg CTE bumper with a warn zeon 10k winch on my truck and have used the winch a bunch at different angles, never had any issues, even with doing a 2:1 with a snatch block for more pulling power. But my bumper has some heavy duty mounts and bolts to the frame with 12 bolts

Excellent feedback and thanks for chiming in! Definitely good to know our frames can handle the stress. How do you like your Camburg bumper and winch? How was the install? I assume you had to drill some mounting holes in the frame?

No problem! I absolutely love the bumper, it was a really thought out design, install was quick and easy with a buddy helping and everything lined up perfectly. Love the winch too! I didn’t have to drill or cut anything for the bumper, it attaches to the frame using the 8 studs, 4 on each side, then ties into the 4 tow hook bolts on bottom.

Wow, that bumper is nice! Camburg has always been high quality, too. I noticed you have a 2nd gen Tundra. I wonder if they fit 3rd gens?
