I know this is :deadhorse:, but I just wish Toyota would offer a 3/4- or 1-ton :(. My travel trailer isn't even that heavy (6,500 GVWR), but by the time I have it hooked up with a WDH and my family & dog in the truck I'm technically over payload. Would be nice to be able to put some stuff in the bed of the truck without feeling guilty about riding over payload! Once it's time for a new truck I'll likely be getting a Godzilla F350. Come on, Toyota!

See that is the concern I have... the cooling systems seem barely adequate then? So if it gets a few bugs in the condenser and blocks even more of the radiator... itll want to overheat at sea level pretty quickly

I would rather tow with an overloaded tundra than be stranded with a shit box on the side of the road.
If you're going to spend tat kind of money, go with the dodge cummins... or even the chevy with the lp5. Fords are complete crap.

I'm not positive that's why it overheated, or if its something else, but so far I've only ever seen 1 brand have cooling system issues on Youtube testing. I'm sure I've not seen other cases, but if it happened more I don't think the main example we all come back to would be so popular.

Are they, though? I'm not talking about a 1/2-ton Ecoboost. The 7.3L gas engines in the HD models are fairly new, but they are relatively simple and so far have not had any major issues (can't say the same for the new Tundra). For the amount I'm towing, I'd rather have a pushrod naturally aspirated V8 instead of dealing with extra upfront cost of a diesel along with all the emissions equipment maintenance.

They've had plug wire issues - as of a year ago many were recommending carrying extras if you were going on a long journey. And then that's on top of the typical Ford lottery of issues. I'd say most likely you'd get a good one, but boy when you get a bad one it's a REALLY BAD one. Not that much different than GM or Ram either, but when comparing to a 2.5 gen Tundra (3rd is still in teething, give it a couple years to get all sorted) where the worst issue won't leave you stranded without neglect it's quite a step.

Yes, yes they are. Their heavy duties are just as much crap as their half tons.
The 7.3 looks good on paper sure. Wait until you have exhaust studs that rust out and all break off in the heads.
Wait until you blow a sparkplug out.
Wait until your coils fail and have to pay almost 80 bucks a hole to fix it.
Wait until you have spark plugs strip the threads or stick in the head.
Wait until your egr valve sticks open at 80k miles and it's a 300 dollar part to fix.
Wait until your cam phasers fail.
Wait until your timing chain fails and it's at the rear of the engine.

The list can keep going. Fords are shit.

    Blown Engine.....
Growing up, my family was 100% Ford. I still have a soft spot for 1980's F-150's, but have never owned one myself. My Dad ran his 1984 F-150 through 1 engine rebuild, 3 clutch replacements and possibly a transmission overhaul, but he used and worked that truck hard. All that being said, I've never purchased a Ford truck and I'm half-a-hundred. I'm also not the guy that would pay $60k+ for a new truck, so when I look at used trucks I'm usually looking at Toyota's with 200,000 miles because I don't mind paying $10k for a used truck. I know I'll probably have to replace everything rubber on the suspension as well as window and door seal trim. It will need a new power steering rack, and the shocks and springs will need to be replaced too. Every fluid drained and refilled, but after that I should be good to go. Good 'ol Toyota's.....

That and the extra $.80/gallon. I hear people talking about buying a diesel for MPGs which is just plain stupid. The only reason to own a diesel or a 3/4 ton truck is for its hauling and towing capacities. I once ran the payback based on higher MPGs and it is just not there unless you are towing heavy loads a lot.

If it wasn't for the stupid emissions crap they'd be far more fuel efficient. Like on a nice drive I'd be expecting 30 MPG. Unfortunately to get that it's another $10k outlay of money, so that's now $20k that needs to be made up, and even at half the fuel consumption it would take quite a long while

All things being equal I'd totally buy a Toyota, but once it's time for a new truck I just can't justify the price a new 1/2-ton Toyota costs compared to a 3/4- or 1-ton. I basically work from home 99% of the time now, and when I drive my truck it's usually on long trips or when I'm towing. I love all the "I can't even feel my 10,000lb travel trailer behind my Tundra!!" comments o_O, because I can definitely feel my 6,500lb trailer behind mine. Sure it's technically within specs, but it definitely doesn't feel totally stable, and side winds on the highway definitely push it around a lot even with a WDH setup. For the money I just can't see myself in a 1/2 ton again.

The way you describe a 6.5k lb trailer behind the Tundra is how I describe it behind a F150 - and there's a noticeable difference. The Tundra certainly isn't a diesel that says ho-hum to 15k lbs, but I'd go as far as to say it tows closer to a 3/4 ton gas F250 than it does the 1/2 ton F150. The first few heavy haul trips with the Tundra I was expecting it to be far more noticeable than it was - guess I was expecting white knuckling but it certainly isn't. I haven't had huge cross winds towing, but I've seen more than a few duallys in the ditch on windy days even so going HD isn't going to help you in them much.

Ditto. Wife was freaking out at me about how if I towed our new 5300 lb trailer the ~15 km home at 80 kph or less without a WDH, the trailer would get blown off the road and we'd all die in a huge fiery collision or something. Turned out to be a thoroughly relaxed drive. o_O

    1 or 2... I lost count
I think TFL was doing a mid-size offroad shoot out and had a honda ridgeline shut itself off to avoid smoking a trans :D

This is why I upgraded to an F-250. I get the same MPGs unloaded as my Tundra and I needed it to pull my Travel trailer…payload is 3,120 lbs. Plus I got it last summer for way less than the new 2022 Tundras!
