For those that carry: is capacity a major factor in what you carry?

Range vs carry ammo really depends. Since I carry a handgun with a shorter barrel I am using +p 124 gr JHP 9mm, typically winchester ranger, federal hst or speer gold dot. For the range, I typically use 124 gr fmj nato spec ammo which runs hotter than your typical 115 gr fmj range ammo most places sell.

I will shoot a box of each of the carry loads (50 rounds per box) to ensure I don't have any issues with feeding or extraction at the range. But after that, I typically will stick with the nato spec 124 gr fmj 9mm for range practice.

One thing I will do is shoot through ammo I was carrying in the magazine at the end of the year and cycle in fresh rounds. I'll also replace rounds that have been chambered multiple times but not fired as you sometimes get bullet setback that can lead to higher than expected pressures due to the bullet being driven deeper into the shell casing compacting the powder more or just impacting the overall cartridge length to the point it could impact reliability.

For the longest time I carried "Israeli" with a loaded mag but empty chamber but now I keep one in the pipe.

    • I will shoot my carry/SD mags (3) first at the "range" (Speer Gold dot 124gr). Just so the barrel is cold and I'm "rusty" as that's how it will be in a SD scenario.
    • 50-150 rds of range ammo depending how I'm feeling/shooting; 115-124gr mixed.
    • finish with 20 rounds (2 mags) of carry/SD ammo to see if I learned or changed anything.
    • reload the 30 rounds/3 mags of carry/SD ammo and be on my way.

Ordered a threaded barrel for the PPQ this morning. May actually go for a suppressor on that baby.

Back in the 90s I bought a CZ52 from a coworker that shot a 7.62 x 25 he warned me ahead of time it was a hot round and would take the gun back if I didn’t like it, he was right over 1500 fps mated to a light 30 cal bullet didn’t make for an accurate gun. I later bought a Glock 20 which I liked a lot better

Capacity is a big determinate for me. Being overprepared is always better than being under prepared.

Apparently, that round, FMJ, can defeat soft body armor.

After the Aurora, CO movie theater massacre, upon learning the attacker wore body armor, I considered the carry of Tok Yugo in 7.62x25 in case I ran into such an outfitted attacker. I ended up buying my first 1911 and working on head shots.

The Tok isn't safe to carry with a round in the chamber and getting a 1911 made to shoot 7.62 x 25 was out of my price range.

Mag capacity is a concern depending where I'm going. However, 99% of the time, I just pocket carry my Ruger LCP (gen1), that only has 6 round mag. I usually carry an extra mag. I've been on this early for over 50 years and never needed. If (and that's a big IF), I need more than 12 rounds in a shoot out, I'd be looking for ways to avoid or get out of the situation first, or at least when I reload that second mag.

I have an M&P9c, holds 10, but it's much bigger and uncomfortable IWB. Honestly, best defense is to just stay out of trouble and areas where you can get into trouble.

Being over prepared would be educating yourself and training and entirely independent of capacity.

All due respect, which at this point seems to be very little, you know nothing about me. I am trained. I am educated. The idea that you will only ever need 6 rounds or you're fucked regardless is and old and broken fairlytale.

I can refer you to several professionals who have and will publicly agree with me. Had you been appropriately training, you would understand without the need for me to inform you that there are a thousand variables, and the limited, fantasy scenario you are training for is likely not what you will experience.

ETA: I do agree, however, that training and knowledge are also great forms of overpreparedness.

On the topic of being prepared with knowledge; in a single attacker situation, unless you hit an airway or vital organ, which no matter how often you train may prove difficult for various reasons (heavy clothing, partial or full cover, poor aim due to being in an unfamiliar and stressful situation, body composition, etc) an attacker may remain conscious and able to continue an attack until they have ~40% blood loss.

Further, consider a catastrophic event. Perhaps the situation is so large that no one is coming to help you and it's several hours or even days until you make it back home. Is it particularly knowledgable to assume that you will only ever need a firearm to deal with a single attacker? I'm personally more concerned about this scenario than a single attacker, as my situational awareness is phenomenal and I practice avoidance above all else.

Indeed. As I've heard many times, "Best way to handle an armed confrontation is to avoid getting into one in the first place."

More prepared > more rounds, and almost all common/popular CCWs since most of us were born range from 7-10 (+1) up to 15-17 (+1) rounds.

I’ve never once trained for some dumb made up scenario, can’t stand “gun guys” who do, and got most of my experience from exchanging fire with peeps hunting me on their turf.

The closest I came to having to defend myself with lethal force happened 20 feet from my front porch. The attacker was a man I'd never spoken with but have helped his family out of a tight spot twice.

I had no idea he was going to do that or I'd have stayed inside all day. You just never know.

As for "disengaging," not possible. He rushed in unannounced and literally backed me up against a rail with a 12 foot drop to the ground.

In my case, carrying pepper spray saved his life and saved me a lot of expense. I have no doubt I would have prevailed in court had lead been loosed but it would have made the news, maybe nationally.

So, talking about training and preparedness, how many of my fellows here carry pepper spray?

Fox Labs and Sabre Red are my go to's, but Fox Labs has to go into a belt case.

From what I've read and seen used, gel is a bit slow to work. Stream for me and mine. Just be aware of wind direction and reposition before deployment if necessary to keep the wind on your side. I prefer the Mark VI container so I can use the pocket clip, Fox Labs doesn't appear to offer that. I think the attacker dyed green for a month is a nice touch.

The attacker I spritzed, well, it really made an impression on him. Definitely "stopped what he was doing." LOL

Pepper spray goes on weak side, every time. Not much good if you don't have it.
