yes, in the old instructions I agree. But for some reason they redesigned the MX4 hardware recently and the new setup does not include the drop down brackets. The instructions I linked are the current instructions and I spoke to a agent at Real Truck who confirmed this.

So how did they explain that their purchase comments still refer to the accommodation for the rails?

The agent I talked to said that is old information and needs to be updated.

I apologize…I see from the new instructions that they actually use T-nuts inserted into the Cargo Management System rails to attach the MX4 rails. Potentially the cleats might still be used, but if so the would be limited. I cannot use the cleats in the front rail. So if I was looking for a new cover now, I would look at the new folding Diamondback. BAK has just taken away on of the flexibilities I enjoy!

No worries. Yeah, in addition to being limited by the t-nuts, I think the knob of the factory cleat would interfere with the underneath side of the cover. So, disappointed because I had pretty much decided on the MX4.

Thank you, but if I lowered the rail I couldn't attach my cover to it..
As stated my Flex had a hard time clamping to the bed edge.
It is solid being mounted to the rails.

Besides, I didn't like the HUGE OEM cleats anyway.
I prefer my smaller and more plentiful custom cleats..

The new m4x uses the rail but you can’t use the cleats. Apparently it was redesigned in the last month or so

    These will work...
    https://billettiedowns.com/products/rail-tie-down-anchors-for-toyota-tundra-pair

UPDATE: Received the rail tie down anchors in black powder coat from the above billettiedowns.com site. Here are some pictures comparing these "cleats" to the OEM version on the side using the included "slide in" plates and then installed on the cab end of my truck bed where the BAK MX4 meets the bulkhead using the optional "rail nuts". Sorry, forgot to take a picture of the rail nuts before installing - they are well made flat nuts beveled so that when I turned the attachment screw, the nut seated properly in the rail channel. So, here is one option that does work!

They also have a kit of "rail nuts" which I ordered to install the anchors on the cab rail. These go into the rail and lock into the rail as they tighten.

Installed the Lomax Tri-fold today and can confirm that the factory cleats are usable.

The anchors come with a threaded backing plate which can be slid in just like other cleats. I replaced that there also are rail nuts available (which I ordered too), so that I can attach the anchors in the cab back rail - I cannot slide them in due to my BAK cover rails. If you look at the web links I provided, you can see the backing plates with the anchors and the optional rail nuts. Yes, I will post pics when I install them.

I also just purchased the MX4 and am bummed the factory cleats don’t work. To someone else’s point, you can’t use any other cleats where you would need to slide something down from the end cap because the new mounting points will get in the way. So for future buyers, if you get the MX, figure out what cleats you want to use and go ahead and install them at the same time you install the rails.

If someone finds another alternative cleat that will work, please post.

Ahh. Thanks. I saw T nuts and just glanced at it earlier and thought i would still have to slide them down the rail from the end. My mistake.

Very happy with the OEM Toyota 6.5’ tonneau. Since the recall the attachment points and overall stability and reliability have been significantly enhanced. I like it a great deal.

So far, so good. Fits very well, seems high quality. Easy one-person, two-tool install. No rain since I installed, so can't comment on weathertightness.

those Billet flush anchors look nice, but expensive!

Does anyone have an alternative solutions that's more cost savings? I have a MX4 coming (new setup that uses existing bed rail), so just looking for some low profile anchors. I don't need anything fancy, considering i'll be using them once in a blue moon, but since i'm in the process of installing my MX4 soon, if I can find some more affordable low profile rail anchors, I might as well do it at the same time vs have to take it all apart later and do the same thing.

    thanks in advance

I got some of these off Amazon.

They say 1,000 lb. working load, and I'm not sure I'd trust that, but I wouldn't be relying solely on the bedrails they're attached to for anything that heavy anyway. Any heavy loads and I'd use multiple tiedown points, as in these and the factory bed. cleats

They seem fine for what they are, and very affordable.

that's great! exactly what I needed since I won't be strapping anything too crazy. More just having them there just in case. Thanks!

On another note, is my eyes tricking me? Did you bolt down your shovel?

Don't forget to get the T-slot nuts too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q8JWB88?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Lol, I did... not so much "bolted down" as just finger tight to keep it from moving around and being underfoot. (or in my case, probably "under knee" when I'm crawling around up in there)

You would be amazed how hard that little sucker was to drill through.

ah good to know, didn't realize it didn't come also with the T-Slot. Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing about drilling and chewing up drill bits. Looks very cool! Love the setup.
