So at least four times now since I've gotten my '21 with push button, I've pulled my keys out of my pocket to find somehow the backup key release had been pushed; since the keychain is attached to the backup key, the fob fell to the ground each time. Anyone else ever have this happen?

This obviously had me concerned. One, I don't want the fob hitting the ground, and two, I could see situations where that could happen and I might not notice the fob was dropped.

So my solution, I took a short section of paracord, pulled the inner strands out. Tied the sheath to the keyring attached to the backup key, then threaded the other end through the tiny hole on the fob. Cut off some excess and then tied a stopper knot on the end so the cord can slide freely through the fob.

Does this qualify as a custom mod? :)

    Too many, but not enough....
Most definitely does. It also makes me glad I have a traditional key lol.

I really wouldn't mind having one again too.

Can you put the key ring on the corner of the fob where you ran the cord?

I don't think I'd get the keyring I have currently through there. It's a pretty small hole on the fob.

Of course then I'd have to worry about losing the backup key, although being it weighs very little there's a much lower chance it would fall out on its own even if the release button was pressed.

They make some pretty small key rings, I would think there would be ones that fit. Maybe even some wire? At least wire won't fray but I guess paracord is pretty strong.

That was pretty smart. Toyota key are $$$ to replace. I am also glad that I have a actual key. The push start system is apparently so easy to to bypass and steal the vehicle. Here where I live, Chargers or anything with a hellcat engine is getting stolen left and right. My ex-wife’s Accord, also push button start, was stolen. No broken glass, no alarm, nothing. The push button start key fobs are constantly transmitting to the vehicle. They have a scanner that picks up that signal, copy's it and you wake up with out a vehicle the next day.

I've had mine one year now, and it's happened a minimum of 4 times.

Yeah, I've heard about that a lot, it's concerning.

In my opinion, push button is a solution in search of a problem that creates all new problems. The conveniences can be nice at times, but I really never had a problem with conventional keys.

My wife drive a 2020 Lexus NX300. It has push button start. I would by her a Faraday bag but I know she won’t use it. Luckily the NX is not a highly stolen suv.
