FlexFuel Fuel Pump Issue?

Dang. that stinks. Well. Get a copy of techstream and see if you can reset the alcohol density. Go from there.

 

well, I don’t know. Because there are others who have had the fuel pump replaced under warranty and STILL have the problem. Would that mean the fuel pump is bad again?

 

No. It’s means that Toyota has no fix to keep the alcohol density percentage correct and they don’t plan to find one. As long as you own a flex fuel Tundra you’ll have the problem. The pump does nothing.

 

I feel the best approach is to keep an eye on the fuel alcohol percentage via obd reader. When it starts creeping up, reset the percentage via dealer, techstream, or one of the bi-directional scanner/readers that have the capability.

 

You are correct. I didn’t have the capability, unfortunately. The fuel pump did nothing for me.

 

I will have to keep an eye on our sequoia then. It too have the flex-fuel engine. At 32k, so far nothing yet. Hopefully it wont show up. But can never be too sure. I do have the knockoff techstream that I’ve used to change couple setting like seatbelt chime volume and key reminder chime volume. So I’m some-what familiar with how it works.

 

Are all the 2017s flex fuel?

 

I believe manufacturers were mandated to create a certain percentage of them. Not all of them, thank God!

 

Not so much mandated as every flex fuel vehicle was assumed on paper to run gas half the time, so it boosted the brand's fleet mpg to meet the federal standard. I wonder if that bonus may have ended as a lot of flex vehicles have gone away

Imagine every ffv 5.7 counted as a 28 mpg vehicle

If you were in the market for a 2017-2020 would you pass on the flex fuel Versions,or is it a something that’s affecting just a few.

 

I would buy based on condition and price. If it happens to be non flex-fuel, then you got lucky.

The issue can be contained by resetting the fuel alcohol percentage, so long as you do this before the fuel pump burns out.

 

I bought one not knowing that it was a Flex Fuel version.... I see it as a benefit - that I can basically run any E85 if I wanted or I can just run regular gas. (Almost Hybrid like)

Other than this possible Fuel Pump issue - nothing to complain about...

 

E85 cleans carbon buildup like crazy and makes more torque so it's not all bad. Some ffv trucks never have a problem

 

Same issue over here. 2018 FFV that had a hard time starting if it was 40* or below. Luckily its still under the federal emissions warranty, but it's been at the dealership waiting on a fuel pump since February 15th and they still have no idea ETA for when they'll receive fuel pumps.

 

I don't know that it affects all flex fuel engines. I have a 2015 and have never had the issue with mine.

 

I finally got my issue fixed! Cost about $1,100 and about 6 months of waiting but they replaced the fuel pump and recalibrated the fuel-alcohol ratio and she runs perfect again!

 

My 17 flex fuel truck starts fine even in cold weather, but has intermittent lurches/pulsing vibrations in 5th and 6th gear at highway speeds only when the weather is below 40-50 degrees. My initial assumption is torque converter since it goes away if I shift to 4th.

Has anyone else with a bad fuel pump experienced this?

My alcohol percentage is a pretty constant 2.75%, even when filled up with non-ethanol fuel which is a little strange.

I won't be able to test it for another 6-7 months when it gets cold.

 

That is 100% the fuel pump. I'm just replying on here in hopes to help others. The hesitation and feeling of a misfire is a very unusual symptom of a bad fuel pump so most shops won't be able to figure it out. Here is my video on replacing the pump etc.

Or for $170 throw a Deatschwerks dw300 fuel pump in the canister. It fits with no modifications needed. Most have gone this route.

 

This is what I did. Replaced the second OEM pump on my Tundra.

Did the same pump on my supercharged Tacoma as well. Good results both times.

 

Which DW300 pump? They seem to have several to choose from.

 

They are all 340lph. The 9-1026 kit has a decent filter. Can re-use the suction hose with fuel injector clamps to ensure a good seal.

Thanks for that info. I couldn't find what pump motor could be replaced since Toyota doesn't just sell the motor.

 

That is a Dasaita. It's about $500-$600 and you can find the newer version on Amazon. It's been excellent the 3 years I've had it. Carplay works awesome, youtube, streaming... basically whatever app you want that runs on Android

 

It's very good video and lots of information. It's a mix of people who will have Toyota fix it, diy with the canister only or take everything apart to swap just the pump. For some it's a bit too involved with taking the canister apart to swap pump. Installing the supercharger you have to swap pumps out for the higher flow in non-flex setups.

 

Thank you and you're absolutely right in your summary. The list price on the FFV entire assembley is $600. My local dealer runs 25% off a few times a year online only and I was able to get the whole fuel pump assembley for $382 w. tax and free shipping. The pump I took out that was original from factory in 2016 says "Made in Brazil" which I thought was interesting.

 

Thanks. I noticed they sell DW300 and DW300C (compact?), and I didn’t know if that mattered.

This seems like a good, proven replacement that doesn’t break the bank.

 

The 9-307-1026 is Toyota specific. Yes it's a compact dw300c. It's pretty much plug and play.
