i have a new puppy 5.5 months old. It’s been a while since I’ve had a dog. What’s the best flea and tick medication these days?

    • Frontline
    • Advantage
    • Advantix
    • Bravecto
    • Nexgard

Any other I’m missing? I’m in Northern California if geography makes a difference.

Wow thanks for the share. Are these ok to use on my 5.5 month old pup? Are you using it every 12 weeks like it says?

Also found another chewable, Nexgard. So many choices!!!!

We've been using Vectra 3d and out works well, we've used Nexgard with success also.

See which your vet recommends since some products work better than others certain years.

Been doing nextgard with my dog for the past 3 years. Nothing on him and hes a hunting dog so there is plenty of opportunity. Also since it is a chewable, he thinks hes getting a treat.

Trifexis or Comfortis (99.9% Effective) when they are 8 - 12 months or so (Needs to be weight matched). When they are young, I don't use anything but a flea collar and give them a bath and try and scrub the bugs off of them. I also leave them outside more when they are young. They will appreciate you more when they are older and you let them start coming in more. Makes the training process easier for me. (Shhh... Here's a secret they ALL want to come inside, it is a reward, they take it as moving up in social landscape of the family, and will work and train harder to retain that status.)

I don't know how young a dog can be in order to use Bravecto( check with your vet) but for the last 2 years I've used it on my beast and it works great.

We started out with Nexgard , which worked well. We changed vet's and are now using Simparcia very comparable to Nexgard, and are saving $15 a month. Let's face it, flea&tick treatment is not cheap.

They need to be 6 months and at least 2 kg for a brevecto collar. I'm graduating from vet school in 10 weeks. I personally use nexguard on my dog and I have used advantix 2 as well. For a spot on I would use the advantix 2, for a chewable I'd use nexguard. It's safer than brevecto. Bravecto has more reported side effects per uses than nexguard does.

We use the seresto collar on both our dogs. They still occasionally get ticks but we live in an pretty wooded area. Never had fleas.

I use Advanta on our 16 pound lap dog, and have to pull tick.

The lower the dog to the ground, the more prone to body ticks.

Have some tick shampoo ready along with the topical....

Seresto Collars are the best thing ive ever used. I have three dogs and one constantly had fleas that she gave to the others. no matter how many baths or shampoos i used she always had them back immediately. Vet recommended the collars and literally the next day they were gone and havent seen a flea or tick since we got them. They are pricey at $80 per collar but last 8 months.

My dog is on Simparica. Vet said it’s the exact same as Nexgard, just not the “brand name”

I got mine from our vet. I now use Simparcia. which you can buy online. Also comes with $15 rebate. A 6 month supply for my 55# dog was $120, excluding rebate. I will look for link .

I remove the collar before my dog jumps in the pool. I’ve been very satisfied with Seresto, it’s pricey like @ttc06 said but your pup will be covered for 8 months. No ticks, fleas

Idk of anything but like anything I’m sure there can be issues, just check around the neck when you first use it and if there’s any marks that look like a reaction then don’t use them. We don’t have kids but I’d image if you teach your kids not to chew(I’m a dog person not a kid lol) on them you’ll be fine. We still pet and love over ours. They do seem to have a bit of a greasy feel to there coats but same with most other products.

We get ours through a home delivery program with the VCA (which is our vet).

$14/month for the Simparica for my 57lb girl and it’s auto billed and shipped. Pretty convenient.

Don’t know if you go to a VCA, but that might be an option if you do.

I get mine through my vet as well. Jump online and look for coupons though. They sometimes have them. Also, for my flea/tick and heartworm doses I set a monthly calendar reminder in my phone and email. This way im not a bonehead and forget to give the turd gobbler a dose

The seresto collars work if there is not a high tick load where your dog will be. When I was using the advantix 2 topical my neighbors were using the collars and all 5 of their dogs had ticks (a few compared to how many if they were using nothing), but my dog never had any on her and they were in the same yard (we were in a complex type thing). Also, they are labeled for 8 months, but the actual good control from them is about 4-5 months, so they aren't as cost effective as they advertise. To get Nexguard, you'll need to get it from a vet (or have a prescription from a vet). But be careful ordering online. Some places will sell "nexguard" that looks the same, but they don't actually have any active ingredient in them. The place VCA sells from online will most likely be the real stuff.
