I seen others ask this question but I've not seen a definitive straight answer yet. I have a Tundra 06 automatic 4x4 double cab (in great shape). I will soon be living on the road for a while and plan to tow a vehicle behind a motor coach. If the rear drive shaft is disengaged on the 06, can it be towed without damage with the front wheels on the ground? Or does the front wheels need to be off the ground? Is the answer to my question any different in any newer model Tundra or Tacoma? Ideally I'd like to tow the 06 4 down with drive shaft disengaged.

    Thank you for any help.

I really want to help and also curious what people do to modify the vehicles being towed. I see a lot of other 4x4 behind motor coaches, but really did not investigate. I did do a lot of flat towing with a 2WD with manual transmission up to 500 miles at a time. Placed the gear in neutral and away I go. But never did a 4WD and automatic.

I have a 2002 2wd 1st gen Tundra that I tow behind our motorhome. I had the drives haft disconnect installed by Tucson Driveline. They were the authorized dealer in my area. Set me back about $1800. Not sure if that works for 4wd.

I have the same truck (2006 DC 4x4) and the owner's manual is clear on this. No dinghy towing (what you are describing). Can you not buy (or finance) a two-axle car hauling trailer and haul the truck on that?

You can flat tow if the rear driveshaft is disconnected. The front drive shaft (if 4wd) is disconnected in 2wd mode. That leaves the transmission disconnected from both and not spinning.

I've had the driveshaft disconnect by Superior driveline on 02 2wd now for several years. As long as I get under the truck and grease it before I set out on a trip it works great. If you don't use it for six months at a time you'll need to do a little greasing/adjusting maintenance before you tow.
