    First time doing my own I broke the plastic cap, a cheap filter tool, neighbor had to hold my legs while I tried to get it off with 1/2" rachet and 2' steel pipe. Good thing I had the metal cap ready to go.

    I snapped the cheapo metal filter tool with just a 3/8" ratchet that was maybe 10" long at most, no breaker bar or anything large involved. If the last posts are talking about the filter cap, it's already metal and unfortunately now has a couple teeth marks from my cartridge oil filter wrench that was also not the right tool.

    Yup.
    Putting the skid plate back on is definitely the suck part of it.
    Also made me realize the dealer lost one of the bolts.

    Yesterday I did the first oil change on my 2020 Limited since purchasing it last year. I've been doing my own oil changes for 40 years so the concept is not new to me.

    I got the front of the truck on ramps and removed the fill cover on the top of the engine like always. However, I was totally unprepared for the force and volume of oil that came gushing out when I removed the drain plug. My catch pan is like the picture below, so the sides aren't very high.

    Much of the oil splashed out of the pan and all over the floor, the passenger side ramp, and inside the front passenger wheel. It was a huge mess to clean up afterwards. I've never had oil come out of an engine with such force before.
    :eek2::crapstorm:

    I replaced the drain plug with a Fumoto valve that will hopefully help to control the flow better next time, and I will use a deeper drain pan. I also replaced the plastic oil filter housing with an aluminum one. The plastic one was on really tight from the previous oil change done by the dealer I purchased from.

    With a Fumoto valve that has the nipple you don't need that drain pan. You can go straight into an empty jug. This is what I do. I always have empty's after taking used oil to auto parts store. Oil will not gush out with Fumoto. In fact the only disadvantage to a Fumoto is slower draining.

    You are correct Stumpjumper. I use Fumotos on several of my vehicles but I always buy the ones without nipples. Some of my drain plugs are on the bottom of the oil pan and I'm paranoid about debris in the roadway hitting the Fumoto, so I want them as flush as possible. But in the case of the Tundra the drain is more on the side of the pan so it wouldn't have been an issue. Oh well, it will still be much better than using just a plug.

    I have a similar pan and just cut a 6"x"6 hole on top ... pan can still be used to pour into disposal container.

    Have a buddy who had a Golf GTI before his Tundra. He came over one day to do some maintenance and acted all like he's done all of this before, no big deal. I didn't check him when he was doing things. Sure enough, he brought his own catch pan, and didn't use mine that was sitting out in preparation for his oil change. As you experienced, you know what comes next. He's since gotten himself a proper catch pan and no longer an issue. But the look on his face was comical and he tried to blame me for not telling him how the oil would come out (I've owned a Tundra for the last 9 years). Sure buddy, do I need to tell you to open the fuel door AND remove the fuel cap before refueling too?

    I used 5 gallon Lowe's bucket after very good suggestions from here. Even it was being little windy I didn't have any mess. I have the same catch pan. I'm so glad I used the bucket. After draining I pour oil from the bucket to the catch pan than to the recycle place. I know it was too much steps but next time will use plastic hose to drain since I installed fumoto valve as well.
