There used to be a Rogue River cheese of Medford? years ago that real good. Reedsport used to have a cheesery back in the 70s. Definitely gone by now.

Drain was actually and is a cool town. Only a 50 minute drive to Winchester Bay. 13 minutes from the Umpqua River. Smack dab in the middle of the best Roosevelt elk hunting in the state. Logging country. In Drain a summer job is setting chokers on a high lead show not working at McD's. Most everyone in town owns a firearm and a hell of a lot 4X4s and not afraid to get them scratched. My high school got the first cinder 1/4 mile track years ago. I ran a 1:58.3 880 on it my freshman year. And....when I stopped thru on my way up to AK....Our only market had Tillamook ice cream. First time I saw it. One of my highschool friends became fire chief, another the town LEO, another head mechanic for the school district, another head football couch. We had a high percentage go on to college. Some became Beavers. Their mistake. Joking of course. We got a good education because our classes were small and our teachers were top notch because they loved the small town atmosphere. You know....a real community. Small rural red towns are hard to beat IMHO.

I know all too well about SMALL COMMUNITIES....Coos Bay....but of course Booze Bay is a Metropolis compared to Drain....I just figured it would have been somewhat boring growing up there....

FYI....Drain is one of the oldest platted towns in the state. Yoncalla, 5 miles away is where Jessie Applegate ended up. (Historic Applegate Trail)There were Applegate descendants there back in the 70s.

I was raised on my dads 72 acre farm. We had 50+ Herefords, Romney sheep, hen house full of chickens, pigs, three walnut trees, several Hazelnut trees and one big ass garden every year. I was in FFA and 4-H club. Boy Scouts too. I owned 4 Quarter horses at one point and a Hereford show/breeding bull, Henry. No time to get bored. Imagine what my chores were like. No video games back then. We only got one channel. KEZI. Fun times heh...heh

We have a calibration lab in Portland. Coos Bay used to be pretty busy back in the day with wood products. Hell I remember seeing big ass ships getting loaded up with wood chips and raw logs headed to Asia. Not to mention pulp plants, plywood plants, saw mills up the Ying yang. Commercial fishing....Clam Chowder better than you will ever get on the easy coast for sure. Prefontaine grew up not too far away. Got his rare autograph on a 1968 Oregon track meet handout. My high school track coach, Zeke Levins, was a personal friend of legendary Bill Bowerman. Got the autograph in Oregon's locker room which we had access too. I have Dick Fosburys autograph. A Beaver. The first guy to do the "Fosbury Flop" technique that every high jumper on the planet uses to this day. Prior to Fosbury everyone was doing the scissor kick.

Those damn big ass chip trucks would head south on the 5 from Weyerhauser's facility in Springfield and go through Drain and on to Coos Bay. 24/7. Once at Coos Bay terminal the whole freaking trailer would be lifted and then dumped into the ships cargo hold. Usually Chinese flagged.Mind you this was late 60's to late 70's before the bs Spotted Owl fracked everything up pretty much for good. Same thing happened with the BS Snail Darter fish in Kommiefrackornia. Diverted most of the water to the delta so the farmers couldn't grow food for humans. Last I heard the Snail Darters are living it up. Has anyone seen one??? As far as I'm concerned....bait....
