The guy I talk to who knows a lot about this changes oil once per year in vehicles he doesn't drive much and every 5000 miles in his daily. I think the 5000 mile interval is based on his UOA by Blackstone but I'm not sure.

Just finished my first oil change, 3014 miles on the truck. I used Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0w20 and Toyota oil filter. The drained oil was quite dirty, so glad to have fresh oil in it. I plan to change again in the spring, and should decide by then what brand of oil to use long term.

Did it look dirty on the dipstick too or were you only able to see that after you drained it?

I could see it on the dipstick just a little better than when new. When I poured the oil from my drain pan to my 5 gallon storage container the oil looked less dirty, my drain pan is also black plastic.

I was happy that the engine didn't seem to use any oil during those first miles.
