I recently purchased my 03 tundra and the previous owner told me that the 4x4 worked great. Stupidly, I took his word and didn't test it but I suspect he wasn't intentionally lying so I believe that the 4x4 probably worked semi recently.

    • When I hit the buttons they both blink respectively and don't go in, I also had somebody hit the button as I was under the car and I hear nothing from the ADD actuator or the Transfer Case actuator.
    • I checked both the fuse under the hood and the one in the drivers footwell.
    • I also jacked the front of the truck up and did my best to tap on the actuators as I was spinning the front wheels all to no avail.
    • The transfer case to front dif driveshaft spins freely no matter if the button is pressed or not.

My next plan is to take a better look at the plugs although I have ensured they are fully pressed in.
If I do clean an actuator's internals which should I start with?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Read the mega thread start to finish. It is a literal goldmine of information for common problems, fixes, etc.
So ... you wanna buy / just bought a 1st Gen Tundra, eh?

This thread is what you are looking for currently:
    4WD Issues

9 times out of 10 it seems like the cause is corrosion under the actuator cap

Start with your transfer case actuator. Plenty of pics on this site to figure it out. Oh, and I shouldn’t have to say this, but play with the 4wd on loose pavement or dirt.
