From what I've been looking at, on an IFS setup, it looks like basically all LBJs are built in tension while the UBJs are in compression. On solid axles, it looks like they're all both in compression.

What needs to be done is the lower portion of the spindle needs to be designed to go under the lower control arm.

    It's not a feature of IFS, it's a bug.

They snap in two and it happens even if there is no slack in them that a mechanic can detect. So unless the mechanic specializes in the vehicles he repairs, he doesn't know about idiosyncrasies.

Anybody got a part number handy for the LBJ castle nut? 2005 DC 4x4. I bought the recall kit, they threw some cotter pins in the box but no castle nuts. My old ones are, uh, not coming off the old LCA.

Local ACE hardware had nuts that fit but the "castle" portion is too tall to get a cotter pin thru the LBJ. I can torque them to get me to the alignment shop, but I don't want to drive around or on the highway on them.

It comes with the balljoint (along with a cotter) if you buy the LBJ individually.

But for '05-'06 the castle nut p/n is 90171-18003

I'll go ahead and toss some other p/n in here too for '05-'06 just in case.

    Boot bolts (4 req'd): 90080-10066
    Boot (both sides): 43346-34010
Cotter: Don't buy OEM kids, just get a qulity multipack from the big box store

While this thread appears to be a lot of schadenfreude,I guess the need to spread the word on LBJs still exists. I mention TBs and LBJ to everyoneI run across driving a nice FGT and very few seem aware.

Saw a 1st Gen. Access Cab Tundra today that was missing a front fender. I asked the owner what was up.

His LBJ failed "while parked at a gas station." I wish I had taken a pic but I'd first have to have a camera or phone on me capable of taking a good one. LOL

(I love my flip phone put the camera is not its best feature).

Just another reminder for me to REPLACE THOSE LBJ'S AS SOON AS I CAN.

TBs? Maybe I'm drawing a blank, but what issue are you referring to? Want to be sure there's not another design flaw with my truck that I'm not aware of...

Oh der... I was stuck on throttle body in my mind. What's wrong with our throttle body!? Haha

Timing belt is a no brainer for any vehicle! Change it when specified in maintenance schedule.

    Thanks.

To be fair, I've heard the LBJ's don't always show signs of impending failure. The owner of that truck should have replaced them if he/she didn't know when they had last been replaced.
