Figured I'd start a BS thread for all of us in Emergency Services. Start off with where you work/volunteer, rank, time on the job, and anything you specialize in.

I've been in the fire service for 7 years now on the volunteer side, and 2 years career Firefighter/EMT at UTC Aerospace Systems IAFF Local I-88.

My volunteer department has a pretty versatile town, we have some hiking trails with cliffs that we do a few high angle rescues a year off of, as well as a gorge with class 3-4 rapids giving us the occasional swift water rescue.

On the career side we provide Fire/EMS/Security for a aerospace defense contractor. We cover about 250 acres and 2 million square feet of manufacturing, testing and repair with about 4000 employees at peak times. We do a fair amount of hazmat, and confined space rescue.

    Be safe out there.

I've been a volunteer since the age of 15 as an explorer for a SD in CA. Since being in CO, I've been a volunteer for the same PD since 2011.

Volunteer in DougCo Sheriff's Office since 2014. We do the jobs that take up too much of LEO's time so they can be out doing the hard stuff instead. We also act as professional traffic cones so that LEOs don't get hit by stupid drivers while they are out of their vehicles.

What's up guys? Started off 4 years volunteer/ live in Firefighter EMT that did wildland firefighting during summers (mostly in Washington, did California in 2007? May have been 2006), joined the military as a firefighter for 4 years and did one tour of the Stan working as a EMT-B filling an Medic spot, went civilian and got hired on at a city FD about three years ago.

I spent the last 10 years as a cop in SC, but recently transitioned out of the career

Spent the last 2 years as a shift supervisor, also did a few years assigned to a proactive team handling community complaints, and several on patrol

I got out in 2011. I am happy I did when I did...however today's climate worries me for all of my friends that are still doing it. A good friend of mine got beat up pretty bad on Saturday night. Neurology appointments and all with blurred vision and headaches. I was texting with him last night and reminded him that I am not longer sworn if I happened to get a name...haha

Kids are tough for sure. I had a run of kids(a little older kids) myself. One had a heart condition at 4 years old. Being first on scene and doing CPR (at a family reunion, no less) you're right, you never forget the faces, sounds and scene. It was horrible. Car crashes also. I belong to a non-profit organization called Safe Kids Maine, they're a national group, installing and educating parents on car seat safety. That's kind of how I keep my hands in it these days. Most of the other people there are Police Officers/Firefighters/Emt's. It's a nice way to keep the camaraderie going for me.

Being a low guy on the totem pole, I can say we all appreciate the guys who remember what it was like and take the time to mentor the newer folks. Everyone has those difficult calls that just stick forever. That's the part they always forget to print on the job description when you're applying lol.

I have served 6 years as a volunteer Industrial Firefighter with the Chevron Richmond Refinery between 2001-2007 and am still an active member of the Refinery Oil Spill response team. Fortunately for me I have never had to deal with any medical responses, but have had to deal with a couple of small wildland fires and pump fires. I dropped out of firefighting when training started becoming no longer fun (3 trips to the Industrial Fire School at Collage Park, Texas ... Fun times ) and harder on the body. To this day I miss it, but understand physically I might be more of a liability than ascent.

Still very much appreciate what those of you who are still active and retired do and have done to serve your community

Every single one of you that posted on this thread is amazing!!!! Thank you so much for your service to your community and the people that need you.

I have not officially volunteered for any service but have trained to be a wilderness EMT, which is nowhere near your skill level, but have had to do high angle rescues and minor patient care a few times. The intensity of the situation escalates very quickly and it's hard to keep your wits in an emergency.

My hat goes off to every single person in emergency services, ESPECIALLY THE VOLUNTEERS that choose to help without financial reward. The financial reward is never what it's about. Making a difference, and helping is the ultimate reward.

Thanks to all of you that shared your tenure, your struggles, and your experiences. Too often your efforts get overlooked but I assure you that I appreciate you guys getting the job done:thumbsup:
