Just finished deal at local dealer for 2021 White Pro. I was told it went into production last week and they were already allocated the truck. I traded in my current vehicle, they gave me a loaner to drive and signed the paperwork. They said they would have to double check the VIN once it comes in, they said by end of January.
    1. Is it possible that they already had the VIN?
    2. I have read some stories about getting the run around when the truck isn’t in the lot, does anyone have any experience with this? Is 3 weeks realistic?
    Thanks!

It really depends on the dealership... some are shady while others are really honest. If you don't want to name the place, give a location. I'm sure there are folks who know the area. With the fact they gave you a loaner, I feel like they have the truck coming. Otherwise how will they get their loaner back?

Yes they should have the vin already. They just will verify that what they see online and made the deal with lines up with what they receive.

Central Arkansas, large dealership. That is what I was thinking, they event told me my first payment would be due late February. Going to be mad if I am making payments on a truck I am not driving....

I wouldn't expect you to be paying until you have the truck...

If you have the VIN, you can plug it in here and see exactly what it is slated to have on it for factory- and port-installed options.
    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

But I’m also pretty sure that if you’ve signed paperwork on a truck, then the VIN information is on that paperwork and it would be illegal for them to not provide you with the vehicle you signed the paperwork on.

That is what I was thinking, they showed me the options already too. I also put down some cash too.
Hopefully I see it in the next few weeks! Although I just read about them slowing production because of a computer chip shortage.

Here's hoping you have a good dealership and the truck is everything you need! :fingerscrossed:

Hey, welcome from Central Arkansas! I bought my Tundra recently from Caldwell, if that's the dealership in question then I'm sure your fine. Landers was a good experience for my first truck but for the second one they were trying to get me to place a deposit in the hopes that they could pull the truck I was wanting to purchase from another dealers lot 300 miles a way. I didn't like the idea of that or the fact that they would be driving the truck back instead of putting it on a transport.

Also, they can't really finalize that paperwork until you drive off the lot in the truck. I'm sure it was more of a they needed to lock you into getting that truck to save it for you plus the salesmen gets credit for the sale that month.

It was landers, I have purchased 2 4 Runners from them in the past with no issue. When I called at first they were looking at other dealer transfer with no luck. Waited a week and then got a call that they were allocated a PRO but were not sure on color. Few days later called with color. Went to put a deposit down, ended up just completing the deal, trade negotiations, down payment, credit, and into the finance department. Financed through Toyota Motor Credit, first payment due Feb. 22. Gave me a loaner and said call you in a few weeks when it gets in.

Yep, they said late February only because they expect to have it at the end of January. Every truck loan i have taken out has a 45 day after delivery start date. You can even call the finance company and adjust the date if you wish. I did that on the Tundra to line up with the date my pay check hit the bank. Some will require one payment before you change it. I have 0% so pushing the date out a little did not affect what I paid over term of loan.

Large dealership? Loaner vehicle? Signed paperwork? I'd say the odds of this being a scam are miniscule. Three weeks is actually very quick for a made-to-order truck. Mine took longer than that and it had already been shipped from the plant to the regional port. Of course, you should actually take delivery of the truck before you make a first payment, but you should be ok.

    Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)!

I don’t think it is a scam, just hope that the timeline is close to what they stated. I am just impatient...

I would have not signed papers or traded my vehicle in until the actual new one was on the lot! Put a deposit on new one, but definitely not what you did, no offense, too risky! You put. A LOT of trust in people who shouldn't be trusted, as they are not your friend, now you have obliged yourself to buy a vehicle from them so they will have the advantage over you if they magically cannot get the vehicle you signed for!

    Good luck!

I did this exact same thing with my 2020. The only difference is that mine was in transit from Texas to Oregon. I also received the VIN for the new truck once I signed the paperwork. I was told that it was unusual to sell a truck that was not yet on the lot but I wanted to make sure that I grabbed it before someone else did.

I had my 2020 transferred to the dealer I wanted to purchase my truck, from a dealership about 15 mi away. Truck had just been unloaded from transport, checked then driven to me. Had deal in place before I even set my eyes on it. That much money for a truck I hadn’t even seen? Was definitely nervous no doubt. But I couldn’t be happier. It all worked out great. Your’s should too.

They have the VIN - that truck is already on the line somewhere or in transit - nothing about it was "made to order." And right now, good luck even seeing a Tundra on a lot around here!
I did the same thing with mine - it was already in transit and the only way to lock in the truck was to go do the paperwork. Now, in my case, they gave me the trade-in, but then let me drive away in my trade-in truck for a week while the new one finished transit to them. And you still have full rights to inspect the truck once it arrives and back out if it isn't right.
