I was thinking plasti dip, wondering if flat black nail polish will hold up?
I rather swap them out if I can find size.

X2 on the nail polish. I'm OCD about my bicycles (high end road bike, enduro, and dirt jumper), when I need to touch one up, I wheel it into the nail polish section at CVS to get a perfect match. Or get an actual small artist/hobby brush and a small can of the exact color you want to use.

You're going to create a lot of work pulling those flares off, pulling every bolt out, and then trying to reattach the flares (the tiny clips with self tappers don't like being used again).

Wife had an old sheer like cotton material shirt top that was thrown away I cut small sections and taped to the torx driver wouldn't mess paint up and carefully screwed back on snug not super tight...another thing was I got a pallet slat n drilled several holes that the bolts fit snug enough to paint thoroughly and let dry several days with a heat lamp and out in the sunlight

I would try painting them as well. But, if you do decide to go with new bolts the size you want is 5/16"-18 x 3/8". Save the nuts from the originals as they're a thin nylock and won't be easy to find at a hardware store.

Just in case you want a good nut and bolt to secure the flairs back in place you can get these from any auto body supply vender or check for them on e-bay. This set ran about $20 . I replaced all because i take the flairs down for cleaning.

are the bolts drilled into the fender or is there a flare base which is clipped on to the car and the bolts go in there?
If you buy fender flares do you need to drill holes>

No drilling. These are decorative bolts.

Almost all fender flairs are easy screw on and very easy to install with only a 10mm socket + 1/4" ratchet. Mine are from bush wacker and what they give you for attaching flairs are screws that are a little longer than the exsisting one's that also hold up in place the wheel well liner and are made of plastic that eventually will get stripped out. The plastic clip/nut are difficult to remove and almost impossible to remove after putting the screw into them. What these 20180212_193549.jpg 20180212_193549.jpg
Clip/nut and bolt will do is allow you to is drop your flairs and wheel well liners very fast and use repeatedly. One other note is that you should wax the contact area of the fender to flair to prevent excessive wear from rubbing.

I would test fit a 1/2" one first before committing to them. That extra 1/8" might end up sitting against your fender and you don't want that.

I did this also and was happy with route66mods the bolts are slightly smaller but still work and fit well.

I'm with you I would go as short as I could because plastic is jot very thick their. Would hate to have them to long and hit the paint.
