I bet they'd have to drink a fifth to get blitzed.

I live in Louisville, KY and from 1935 to about 1972, the Stitzel Weller distillery was the "high ground" of the bourbon industry. That's where Julian Van Winkle (AKA "Pappy") was the master distiller and then his son worked their magic. Their brands included Old Fitzgerald, Weller's, Cabin Still, Rebel Yell and several others. Pappy Van Winkle liked to replace the rye in his mash bill with wheat. The original mash bill for the Weller brand whiskeys dates to 1849.

Old Fitzgerald derives its name from a Treasury Department employee who worked in a bonded bourbon warehouse containing 100,000 plus barrels of bourbon gracefully aging under his supervision. He was reported to have an exceptional taste in bourbon. He would "sample" many of the barrels and mark the barrels that he thought had the best bourbon. When these barrels were withdrawn from the bonded storage, his "honey barrels" became became known as Old Fitzgerald bourbon.

That said, my dad preferred Fitzgerald whiskeys.

My favorites were Cabin Still and Rebel Yell.

Stitzel Weller closed around 1972 due to a downturn in the sale of bourbon. Vodka became very popular and gin remained popular.

Today, Bourbon is on the upswing with a large number of new brands on the market. The Stitzel Weller brands were sold off and today live on as Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace plus Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell and others. Maker's Mark was based on a mash bill and yeast sample Pappy gave to his friend Bill Samuels. Bulleit Bourbon now owns the Stitzel Weller property. A smokestack with "Old Fitzgerald" written on it still stands on the property.

Today, I prefer Rebel Yell, an 80 proof 4 year old bourbon. The price is about $15 - $20 per 750 ML.

Cabin Still was destroyed as a brand by another distiller buying the brand and substituting an inferior whiskey it could not sell for the original bourbon. The brand is now owned by Heaven Hill and is offered as a blended Kentucky bourbon with a similar taste to the original Cabin Still. I like it very much. The cost is around $10 per 750 ML.

I don't care to spend $40 to $100 per 750 ML when Rebel Yell or Cabin Still over ice is IMO a wonderful drink.

Some cool history there. Thanks. I’m still dumbfounded how anyone can put ice in their whiskey. Haha. I love cold ice water and frosty beers as much as the next guy but when it comes to sippin whiskey, it’s gotta be neat!

I agree with your comments on liking your bourbon neat. Some of my most memorable moments are from passing around a bottle of ice cold bourbon, Yellowstone or Old Grand Dad I think, after rabbit hunting with friends in cold weather. A liter bottle of Rebel Yell has a permanent place on my workbench in the garage. A quick "snort" on a cold morning gets my blood pumping when I don't have to go anywhere on a cold morning.

I always find the history of Bourbon and the different distilleries very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

I found this interesting article about some of the last bourbon produced at Stitzel-Weller before the distillery closed in 1992 is going to be used in the Blade & Bow 22 year old Bourbon.

I haven’t tried Rebel Yell or Cabin Still yet but I’m going to try them out. I appreciate the suggestions!

This is how I feel about Buffalo Trace. I can get it for about $25 which is perfectly acceptable.

That said, there’s something special about bringing out an Eagle Rare (tastes a LOT like BT), Woodford Reserve Double Oak, Col. E.H. Taylor, or other higher end whiskey for a dram or two with friends.

Had a nice little local coffee kolsch tonight from Huss Brewing. Not strong enough for me though but it had a good coffee forward taste.

I got my first bottle of Bookers today. I did find a bottle of Makers Mark’s 2020 Limited Release and Private Selection. I’ve heard from some friends they really liked the Limited Release bourbon. 9267F270-B39F-44D0-9016-36CF66C763B5.jpg

Couple pours of a favorite, for our anniversary this weekend. Stayed at a cabin in the woods, just relaxed and read the whole weekend.

Anyone tried Milam & Greene? It's a Texas whiskey. I'll be doing a virtual tasting tonight. My barbershop provided two samples: bourbon and rye. Speaking of, if you're in San Antonio and want a great barbershop experience, give The Gents Place a try. Free drinks while you wait and after your cut.
