A couple of acquisitions today - took a ride to Wyoming. I haven't tried either of these yet, cracked the Widow Jane first.

I'm excited to try the Rare Breed as I really enjoy the regular version.

So the Widow Jane is actually really nice as a neat sipper. I think it's worth the $80 price tag.

I have tried 2 versions of the Widow Jane and didn't care for either. My first bottle of WT RB was fabulous the second was no where close, and they are not single barrels so I don't understand why they were so different.

I'm actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it - then again it was a whiskey kind of day and I might have been happy with a slug of high-proof rubbing alcohol. I wonder how much it varies from batch to batch..? I'll see how I feel about it the second go-round!

If my state weren't so excited about nannying everyone I'd be happy to do some mail trades - unfortunately, Utah doesn't trust me as an adult and/or they want their share.

Wow. This one is a must get if you see it! I honestly might make another trip to Evanston to get a second if they still have them. Drinks incredibly smooth for the proof, has a front end like orange Creamsicle, which sounds weird but is phenomenal. Slightly astringent finish, great mouthfeel. Very pleasant.

In honor of Cinco De Mayo, the wife and I will be sipping on some Mexican Scotch for the rest of the evening to finish off this bottle. Looks to be only about 6, or 8, or 10 ounces left :D

She was threatening to make some coconut margaritas with it... I'm actually good w/that, but I still want a few ounces to sip on!!!

    Cheers everyone and Happy Weekend!!!

Actual taste was bone snapper, overall was the Willett though.

Honestly.. it was the RB. I guard those with my life lol. The kentucky spirit was great, had a better feel, but a little muted.

Here was one more interesting match up. The YTSB was just a super oaky Blantons, blew my mind.

If you are interested find Bourbon Junkies on Youtube, they just did 10 or 11 different WT products in a blind. The higher end stuff did well but the results may surprise you.

I'm quite fond of the Willet as well. We did a similar match up with Sazerac, Willet, and WhistlePig 10 year and the Willet won.

I went to Kentucky this week and toured several distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. It was such a great experience! I learned a lot about the history, production process, tasting notes and I had lots of great bourbon. I did tours at Buffalo Trace, Michters, Heaven Hill and Old Forester. I feel very lucky to have been able to have two different tours at Buffalo Trace with Freddie Johnson who has over 40 years with the distillery. I had Freddie Johnson and the master distiller Harlen Wheatley sign two bourbon barrel heads for my collection.

I was able to get so many different allocated bottles that I had to get a whole separate set of luggage to get them back home. I was able to try 18,19,20,21 and 22 birthday bourbons side by and that was an amazing experience! I tried Old Forester 1910 extra extra old, The President’s Choice, Michters 10 year bourbon, Michters 10 year rye, William Heavenhill small batch 15 year, King of Kentucky Single Barrel 15 year, old Fitzgerald 19 year, Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend, and so many others.

My favorite 1-3 bourbons I tried would be:
    1. Old Forest The Presidents Choice 9 year
    IMG_4079.jpg
    2. Old Forest The 117 Series 1910 Extra Extra old
IMG_4188.jpg 3. This one is so hard to choose. So many good ones to pick! It’s a toss up between the Birthday Bourbon 2019 and the King of Kentucky Single Barrel 15 year

I'm doing that trip next year for my 50th. Taking my neighbor that has dealt with colon/liver cancer this year, he's almost headed to a full recovery. I'm surprising him with the trip and the fact he will be 50 as well

A few suggestions from things I learned on my trip. Most of the distilleries will release different bottles daily sometimes allocated bottles. Buffalo Trace gift shop typically opens at 9am but you can wait outside earlier. Buffalo trace typically rotates between Blantons, EH Taylor small batch, Buffalo Trace, eagle rare and different Wellers.

Michters Fort Nelson in downtown Louisville will drop allocated bottles once a day but at a random time of the day. Get on the waitlist for the bar upstairs. They have some very good bottles available to try but they can be very expensive. I was able to get a bottle of Michters 10 year rye, Michters single barrel rye and Michters Barrel Strength Fort Nelson Reserve (I filled the bottle in person and have my name on it). They also have a tasting room at Fort Nelson in the middle of all the barrels but you need to make reservations.
    IMG_4111.jpg
If you go to Heaven Hill try to do their whiskey connoisseur tour you may have the opportunity to buy an allocated bottle afterwards.

If you want to go to a very cool speak easy bar look up Hell or High Water. Make reservations way in advance. They have some great bourbons and mixed drinks. They have also have a license to sell full bottles. I picked up an Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Kentucky Derbi from there. Make reservations ahead of time.
    IMG_3723.jpg
    IMG_3734.jpg

If want to try some amazing bourbons at a decent price go to Evergreen Liquors off of Market Street in Louisville. Since they sell some food you can grab some snacks and sit at the bar for hours trying different bourbons. The bartender was very knowledgeable and made some great suggestions! It’s a great place to go to!
