As a recent buyer of a white truck this is not making me feel very good!!!!

Have a 2011 Sienna, white, and the paint is super thin and the clear coat stinks...

When I was researching the paint on my 1st gen I found out Toyota used a single stage paint job. Someone commented saying the white ones made today are still a single stage paint job. I cannot confirm this.

Edit- not that this should make the paint peel but it does make me wonder.

Looks like an issue with adhesion of the anti-chip layer. That is a process in painting unto itself. It's the 1st stage of top coat application with paint and clear then applied over it.

No, in the letter, Toyota states the issue is the underlying primer not adhering to the electroplated body metal. So the whole compound finish (primer, base coat, clear coat, and chip guard) is pulling away from the body metal in places on white vehicles.

My arm chair guess is that they use a different primer on white vehicles (a paler formulation) than they do on dark vehicles, where the primer can have a darker pigment. I don’t necessarily think the issue would be the color of the primer, but more to do with the formulation of the primer.

From the pictures, it looks like there is the desired adhesion of paint to primer, but not the desired adhesion of the primer to the body metal.

If you talk to professionals there is a long standing debate over the superiority of SS paint versus BC/CC.

There are 60+ year old cars with their original SS paint still shiny and intact. In formulating single stage paint, the glossifiers are added to the base color by the jobber/painter and then the mix is shot onto the primered vehicle in as many coats as desired (or paid for!).

My point is that SS paint is not necessarily “bad” or “cheap”.

I agree. Didn't mean to imply it was bad. I'm just saying that because it was asked "why only white" and I remembered that previous post. Based on some other posts it doesn't seem like Toyota is still doing SS on these like I though.

That seems to be ALL Toyota’s and Honda’s. If you look at my truck the wrong way it scratches. My wife’s Acura has 100k miles on it and the paint looks like it went through a war zone. To be fair we have kids so it kind of has...

I'm in the paint shop on Monday and ask will around and report back. I may get a Polish salute as to what is going on as sometimes there is a screw up in the chemistry at the higher spectrum of the supply chain and the specialists in charge not know exactly what is going on and are not much aware because they are building new trucks today. I'm sure if there paint adhesion issues that are related to every unit that had that paint configuration, they are trying to minimize the damage by going back through the quality system info. The guys I work with try to make sure the paint job is perfect. It looked good to them when it rolled off the line. Always remember the big paint companies like PPG and others screw up batches. The folks at TMMTX who run that place are pretty top notch automotive professionals.

Something I have noticed in the pics the O.P posted is that it doesn't look like the bottom of my door panels / rockers my 08 has a like texture to it not smooth to the touch wonder if they have used something under the paint that makes It look smooth. I was told mine is like a rock guard material to prevent chips and things from rusting the rockers . Are there and rough like textures on rockers of the 3rd gens ? Or is this the new way of trying to "protect" the paint job?

Yes the 1st phase of top coat painting after moist sand coming out of primer into the spray booth is anti chip. Then top coat base followed by clear and bake. After that they are inspected. Some go off-line for an hour or so to get a touch up. The next process in auto paint is finesse. That's where all the little defects are corrected with a small buffer and some polishing compound. When paint is fresh and the lighting is good, anybody can be taught to touch up a paint job. If there is a dent in the sheet metal, the body is scrapped.

You want a really great paint job buy a Mercedes. I just want my truck

I have a feeling my letter was for my 2017 White Camry. The paint on the front bumper is pretty banged up. Granted, I do a lot of freeway driving each year for my job so it’s quite possible it’s jist normal wear and tear for my usage. My 2016 Tundra on the other hand still had almost factory new paint. I haven’t had the time to dig into this further.

Update. Anti-chip issue probably. I forgot but anti-chip issue more than likely and not all over. Anti-chip is installed before the primer. I got it mixed up as it the 1st step as it enters the primer booth.

I have a 19 pro in white with 6500 miles and when detailing it I have notice a couple of what I would call like spider webs or stretch marks it’s weird never seen that on paint b4 it’s minor you have to really look at it close to see them

I hope my tuck isn't affected by this. Here in Vermont the roads are a carpet of rock salt and brine from November until March. I can just imagine the problems that will occur if this toxic cocktail gets between the paint and bare metal. Ugh...

    Howdy 7.62,

So the chip guard gets applied to bare metal, then prime, then paint, then clear?

Not bare metal. It is applied on top of the ecoat/phosphate that the bodies are dipped in. Then the primer is applied to the entire body which is on top of the anti-chip and sealer as well. Cured in oven which sets primer, anti chip and sealer. Sealer is still tacky until it's cured in the primer oven.

Next base coat (tint is the technical word) with a hot air step to flash any VOCs then clear coat and back into another oven to cure.

I forgot about the anti corrosion treatment.

What's fun is watching the dejig process as all the carriers come back around. Dejig is taking it off of a carrier and moving to the next process. All the hardware that holds the jigs to keep the doors and hoods open and taken off. It's coated with paint. Blasted and used again
