Happens to the best of us. I went with stage 3 motorsports they sell Yukon front and rear kits.

Im wondering how easily the front bearings can be removed without destroying them to reuse them. @VWTim said Zuk doesn’t normally replace them since they typically have so few actual rotating miles on them. It would be sweet to just need the mini install kit for the front and save a boatload of money. Otherwise I’m waiting for a Black Friday sale to hopefully find the front master kit cheaper.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, the pricing difference is at least worthy of investigation. My heart says a complete overhaul is never a bad idea, but my wallet says my heart is a moron

Ps: when I worked for an auto company Yukon couldn't be discounted by promo code, but could manually be discounted up to 10% IIRC. Call/chat with a sales rep and you might be able to swing a better deal.

You should be able to remove them without damage. I plan on reusing my front bearings and getting the mini kit for the front. I already reused the rears for the Auburn. I may get a mini kit for the rear if I can get some deals on bearings and a few thinner shims to go along with the mini kit. I'll be searching around black Friday deals! I'll be doing the install myself, even though it's been a bit.

For anyone interested in an Auburn GripNLoc limited slip, Tandem Offroad has two units available in the garage sale section with 20% off (with discount code). They are also restocking units from Auburn in the next couple of weeks for their Black Friday sale which I suspect will be 15-20% off as well. Email them and ask for Alex; tell him you hear a little birdie might be giving pre-black Friday pricing on it.

The GripNLoc has supposedly been updated with a different cone and clutch design than my old Auburn Pro, but I can't seem to get any details about it other than 25% more torque bias. My Auburn Pro has been great and worth every penny. I am switching to a Powertrax unit that's sitting on the shelf for the simple reason that the Auburn chews through friction modifier more quickly than I would like. I suspect my towing and hauling have a lot to do with that; it's also been doing it since way before I installed the Whipple. On the plus side, I KNOW the LSD still works after almost 7 years and 130k+ miles.

I bring up the Auburn mostly because the Powertrax appears to be NLA. I'm actually tempted to pick one up and sell the Powertrax... but I think the Powertrax will suite my needs a little better.

If you drive pretty normal the Auburn will do well. If your a spirited driver the clutches won't last. I know myself and several others on Tundratalk burned the Auburn up within the year of install.

Yup. Burnouts will do that. Haha. The Auburn was the only one available able the time, so I just closed my eyes and scrolled past all of the posts about dead Auburns on the forums. I have been honestly impressed that it has survived up to this point. I don't usually try to spin my tires on pavement, but in the snow and ice - well, that's a different story. There's a roundabout between my shop and house that gets slicked up late at night. Sometimes the truck just ends up going all the way around it. It just keeps turning left even though I have the wheel turned to the right. I can't explain it. Unfortunately, there's a cop shop 1/4. mile down the road, too. Fortunately, I may or may not have witness police cruisers suffering the same ailment in the same roundabout...

I haven't looked at the Motive install instructions but the Nitros were a soft 500 miles, then a quick break-in specifically for towing. It was only 2 heat cycles or something minimal, and it was all done before the first drain/full. Polished or not, I'd follow the towing part at a minimum, especially our weights and profiles.

This is just my.02. opinions seem to vary on any break-in process, with or without polishing. I just didn't want to pay for things twice so a few days of break-in was worth it to me. Regardless, can't wait for you to report back on your towing. You're going to love it.

I would definitely re-use the front bearings. Especially if the diff was maintained reasonably well. Would probably re-use the rears as well unless they had really high miles. But I would make that decision when I pull them apart and get to look at them and feel them. Any experienced gear installer should have the tool to pull the bearings without damage.

My friend threw an auburn in the rear and said the bearings looked like new with 200k and reused them. I'll be doing the same with my grip pro install with similar mileage.

Same with ring gear bolts. My friend reused his and so will I. Zuk and nitro gear have said they are fine to re-use. Make sure to use red loctite.

Lots of pullers out there that can grab the cage of the bearings without damaging them. I've had to re-use a lot of bearings in my time and never had a failure from them.
I also wanted to say that long burnouts will kill an Auburn and our transmission. I've already been through it.

So now that Motive is blowing out gear sets, when are they gonna discount their master install kits?

I thought about going that same route of sourcing junkyard cores and building them at home and swapping when time allows. My search started and ended at eBay when I saw rear third members at like $900, fronts were much cheaper. I was dreaming of finding some cores for $200 and diy it.

I found a front diff for $100. The rear I’m hoping I can get for sub-$500 but doubtful that’ll happen… I also thought about DIYing in my garage, but I don’t trust myself to set it all up right.

Clamshell for rear is cheap on carpart.. but then you gotta get a locker. Gunna end up paying one way or the other; might as well make it great!

I spent a good chunk of time this AM looking at sites (JEGS, summit, etc) and was assuming 20% off for BF + free shipping. Given my tax rate here, even with 20% off, Mr. Haeffner came out on top. Unless there’s a glitch on Amazon, pretty sure that’ll be most people’s best bet.
