Passed on extended warranty. $2k for an extra 36k miles not worth it right? Finance guy was super annoyed with me

Nope! Search some other threads, can get it a lot cheaper and double the miles! Plus, if you annoyed the finance guy, you know you made the right decision!

This my first new vehicle purchase. I kept staring at that extra 2 grand on the paper and knew i was taking it up the arse. Told him take it off. His eyes were like daggers piercing my very soul

I was offered 7 years/125k miles for $800 and said no.

I believe you have up until the factory warranty expires to make that call. Although these vehicles are very reliable, I got the Toyota 125k bumber to bumber extended warranty because of all the electronics/sensors and would rather not have unexpected expenses.

Wow, I'd take that in a heart beat, it's almost $4900 for the same plan here in Canada.

I’d buy an extra warranty if I needed to buy a Ford, Chevy, GMC, or Dodge.

Good on ya keeping the sales person in line. In my opinion, dealers should be required to offer voluntary warranty plans, not just bake them into a quote when negotiating.

I thinks it’s tantamount to selling a person an $800 refrigerator, but the bill says $950. You investigate and find that they’ve loaded 80 pounds of Velveeta into the unit, because they ALSO sell crappy cheese.

If I wanted diarrhea, I’d ask.

Finance guys make money on any extras they can sell you. They all have tricks up their sleeves. Last Tacoma I bought the finance guy said "will you take the warranty if I drop your rate by .4%?". I said would you have offered that rate if I did not buy warranty. He said yes and I said fine I will take it with no warranty. He got pissed and we haggled for another 15 minutes until I threatened to walk on the deal. Then he started whining about how I stole the truck. I was dealing with the top dog in sales and he was not happy when I threatened to walk.

I have zero tolerance for shyster Finance people...They play off your emotional attachment to the truck. When they “take you back to finance” I tell the guy don’t even try to upsell me anything - nothing, not even a bag of M&Ms and if you do I’m walking. I had one guy ask about a warranty and I said I’m leaving - he profusely apologies and finished the paperwork in like 5 min.

They lie like thieves too, I told one I can get a warranty later before the factory warranty expires and he flat out told me that was not possible. Lying Shysters!

I’ve walked out on many deals. They’ll call back with the deal you want, if not, I go somewhere else.

I bought this vehicle because it was going to be the first that I was going to keep past 60,000 miles I wanted one I could feel comfortable driving until the wheels fell off. That being said I still bought the extended warranty to 125k. At 90k I was taking it in for an oil change and tire rotation but realized the AC suddenly stopped working. A week later it was ready for me to pick up and a $6,000 fix that only cost me the price of the oil change and tire rotation because of the extended warranty. Got my money back on the ext warranty. Its not the motor, its everything else. Once I figured out how to replace the door lock actuators every time they go out for about $50 it is an amazing vehicle. 2015 Tundra 135,000 miles.

I remember someone posting on here a while ago that there was a finance lady at one of the dealerships that had a killer deal on extended warranties that she would sell to anyone. Unfortunately, that's all I remember.

Girls name is Jennifer Taylor at Wolverine Toyota. I purchased a platinum 7yr/125k for $1,275. This is the 2nd time I purchased a warranty from them. I purchased one for my wife’s Highlander in 2011 and used it twice and it did pay for itself.

Definitely price shop it... Dealers have to keep prices competitive on the vehicle itself to get traffic in. Unfortunately, finance guys and service (sales) advisors help make up for some of that lost revenue.

The finance person (F&I in the industry for finance and insurance - although credit life insurance has been proven to be a high cost ridiculous product) in most dealerships is compensated solely on a commission basis. F&I is typically paid 50% of the profit on the product - dealership takes the remaining 50%. Dealerships like to make as much on the finance side of a vehicle sale as they make on the vehicle itself. You also need to understand what is and is not covered by the policy and the applicable deductible, if any. Without knowing those variations discussing the cost is not meaningful.
The only reason to get an extended warranty on a Toyota is if you could not afford to fix a post-standard warranty bad event. I have not had one of those covered events on my 2008 Tundra with 155,000 miles so the money spent on the extended warranty would have been wasted - but I could also afford to cover the cost of a $3,000 repair if it had occurred. For many the cost of an extended warranty is insurance against having to come out of pocket.
