30% range loss lol. They must not be testing in very cold weather. I lose at least 50% of my range in the weather we get in Minneapolis. -13 degrees coming into work this morning. I wish it only lost 30%!

Ya I think a lot of it factors our driving styles too. I think I’m lower as I really don’t drive it in winter, but we’ve never been as cold in years as it is today (-14) but I’m also in FL for a few more days lol

My daily work commute is 15 miles, 14 miles of it is highway (70-75 mph). I generally drive pretty easy when commuting back and forth to work because I have my dog in the car.

Sub zero temps like we have this week will kill 55-60% of my range. I see 40-50% range degradation at 10-20 degrees. I would say I see 30% range reduction around 30-40 degrees. Anything above 45 degrees and the batteries do very well in terms of performance. This is all based on observation, not hard numbers that I have crunched. But this is after 14,000 miles and over a years worth of experience, so it's in the ballpark.

Certainly not complaining, you can't beat science. Cold weather and batteries don't mix well together. But I was surprised to see how much the batteries struggle in the winter environment. You can tell this car was designed in California - it prefers the warm weather!

My favorite new feature with the latest Tesla update is the auto turn signal cancel. You can do the half press on the turn stalk (or full press if you prefer) and it'll stay blinking until the car detects you changed lanes. No more having to manually turn off the signal, or deal with only 3 blinks total (if you're a half press fan). Also, if it detects that you are turning into a turn lane, it'll keep the signal blinking.

    It's in the Lights section

Gotta reach over to the top-middle of the screen now to press it when it pops up. And the button is tiny now. Not a fan of this change at all

Yep. Best part of the update

I think it’s blue now too, IIRC.

Agreed. it is awesome for the car to keep the signal on until you change lanes. just amazing.

it's little things like this that make the software interface game changing.

When I get to drive it, I'm always amazed at the intuitiveness the Tesla has. The Tundra is not listed under the category - intuitive.

and we drove the MS in the cold (19degrees) - the heater worked great. I don't comprehend how you Northern folks can survive in temperature under 40 degrees.

Threatened blackouts Christmas eve going into Christmas due to an over stressed grid.

Imagine everyone charging electric vehicles in that scenario. Then sudden Forced blackouts.

If you have no backup gasser Did you get enough charge to travel somewhere with heat and electricity if you want? No? I guess you’re stuck in a cold dark house. Maybe you have charge to get out but are stations along the way functional To ensure you can get back without a problem?

Medical emergency requiring a hospital trip? I guess you’re counting on an ambulance, can’t get there on your own.

The wife has flirted with the idea since her car is commute only and not a road trip vehicle but I will never sacrifice or risk my ability to get out of town and go find comfort if the house goes dark for an extended period.

They have so much work left to do to catch up to Tesla SC units. I’m surprised these weren’t winter tested enough to be just as stable

Not sure I understand this fully. If there’s no power, there’s no fuel pumps either. EV can also charge in off-peak (like I do) hours so there’s a chance it would not be effected as much as during the on-peak times.

It was only a couple years ago that folks were teasing TX about the grid problems. Well, we had a 2 std dev cold front.

but for the guys in the NE...why is the grid taxed? you guys have winter every year.

We know the answer. it's not good.

Find a gas station in an area that has power. Many also have generators and can continue to function through an outage. When you find one it’s 5 minutes from empty to full.

    just had a thought:

How many runs has this dude done?
    trouble free
    statistically similar each time
    and then drove it home.

much is to be said about Telsa. but it appears it's not politically correct to do so in these weird times.

    exactly.

hundreds of 1/4 mile runs....no problems.

what could be worse or more demanding than a 1/4 mile run from a dig?

and this MS does it about every weekend.

    exceptional stuff.

Same. These were an interesting niche product for the affluent and upper middle class that have been mainstreamed by government incentives. I think these car companies shifting massive resources to focus on them will be bit in the ass in an election cycle or two when the government plays less of a roll in expanding the market and the infrastructure.

Companies will be left with expensive to build EVs they have to sell at a loss and having to reverse the super expensive restructurings they invested in to build them. I could be wrong, maybe this will be a lasting thing but I really think all these companies have been suckered into a trap that will potentially lead to another round of bankruptcies.

TESLA could be OK because this is all they've always done and they may even make out better if the big companies get bored with the market and get back out. The discounting won't be what does them all in. Having to pay to reverse everything that had to be done just to set up to shift focus from ICE to EV manufacturing is what will do it.

I'll help. A 3/4 to full tank can last a week or 2. A full EV charge can last a few days when cold (most of the country 6mo/year) lucky if a few days. I can empty 3 gas cans 18 gallons into my truck. One evil gas station near me has backup power the runs on you guessed it, and plenty of capacity. Oh, I don't have electrical storage batteries at home. I do have a generator, but it would be kind of loud running overnight and use a lot of gas. I also have a DD Avalon Hybrid 45mpg 6-700 mile range full tank.

Maybe if you had a Solar panel system and the clouds, rain or snow wasn't happening. I'm not against EVs, just don't want to give up the freedom. I'd actually like to buy a PHEV (reliable Rav4Prime), but waiting lists are 2 years. In other words, they won't sell you one. If I needed my truck to tow and work every day (not just weekends), EVs are not practical yet. We have a long way to go and government plans to raise fuel prices to force EVs that aren't ready, weigh heavy on low to middle class income earners.

If all manufacturers produced 100% capacity EVs it would take 7-8 years alone to replace ICE vehicles. So at best you are talking 15-20 years for a not yet developed sustainable battery technology (i.e. solid state still in development 4-5 years). Battery availability severely limits EVs and PHEV production. Toyota seems to be allocating "battery capacity" to smaller scale Hybrid batteries to get more vehicles produced, and also severely limiting PHEVs which require larger batteries. Current battery technology will be obsolete in a few years and current EV resale will drop.

I'm ready if the EV technology can be proven. Right now that's not the case. Killing domestic fuel production only kills the economy, caused inflation (everything uses gas/diesel), and hurts lower income citizens.
    A realistic plan is needed.

I live in a cold state (Colorado) If I leave it unplugged I would lose maybe 1% a day if not being driven around. I can also charge off a standard 120v (I use a NEMA 14-50). Generators can supply power in the event there was no electricity, anywhere (unlikely) here.
I have solar panels, (came with the house) but I am not sure its entirely worth their cost.

Dont get me wrong, I still would like a Tacoma, Tundra, or 4R and keep my Tesla as a Sunday driver type vehicle. We have a Highlander (ICE) but I also enjoy my EV. Not so much as it being an EV, but the instant torque, and OTA updates cannot be matched. Not only that, but my $0 in maintenance it costs me. By the time the battery warranty expires (120k or 8 years) I doubt I will even have this vehicle as I am sure I will have a much newer Tesla; just like I do / did with my ICE vehicles.
