    I disagree with you.

I like the simplicity of the Tesla dash.

    No buttons.

My Tundra has all kinds of buttons, and I don't use most them.

Reality - once you get your environment set...you never use those buttons.

yes, it's different than anything humans are used to, but once you experience it, you realize a dash full of buttons is silly.

the LX600....now there's an example of 582 buttons you will never use.

I got to pondering about dash buttons...and lack thereof in a Tesla.

How many buttons do I use in the Tundra?

I just realized I use the SAME buttons in the Tundra that I use in the MX.

mainly, just the steering wheel buttons.

all those other buttons in the Tundra are just taking up space.

You're misinterpreting what I dislike, but your dislike of numerous buttons is definitely valid.

I think the pad on the dash styling looks tacky and cheap, as though it was a complete afterthought. If they did two screens, one for the instrument cluster and one IN the dash, The only "buttons" I would want added would be for the HVAC.

I also hate the way they do the "gear" selector. I'd prefer either buttons in the screen or a traditional shifter. Heck, I'd even take the dial like what Ferd did in the Mach E.

    ah.

gear selector...agree. but we use the intuitive setting...no need to put it in gear...it just know.

screen...eh. may be valid in MY & M3...We have a real dash display + center pad in the MS & MX.

A/C - we told the MX to make the left scroll button the a/c control with a long press.

That's neat that there is a work around, but I would still prefer a more traditional setup. If I'm cranked all the way to the left for a turn, but want to turn the fan down or the radio up (rare but has happened) I can one hand the wheel (the left button would be down at my crotch in this scenario) and use my right hand to adjust the controls. I use this example because my radio volume is on the left of my steering wheel, and I could not use it in that particular scenario.

Yes, very specific and anecdotal, and likely not a big deal to most. I just prefer tactile controls for some stuff because I can operate it without looking down at the middle of the car. Same reason I had that the model 3 doesn't have an instrument cluster. Nothing that is a deal breaker that would keep me from buying one as a second vehicle, but it's just some design decisions that I strongly dislike.

While you did say it's a very specific instance, I can say the same about having a manual transmission when I wanted to light a smoke, turn a corner, shift, take a sip of Monster. I'm all for physical controls, but think they only need to be for critical systems. I like having a physical button to turn on heat/cooled seats, but temp, it's pretty much on auto and leave it.

This is the new Model 3 interior, and that big floaty tablet just looks like shit IMO. I also hate that there's a big gap behind it that would be awkward to wipe down the dash.

    upload_2024-12-30_7-43-22.png

I hate the bigger screen in the new Tundras for the same "stick out of the dash afterthought" look too. Same thing in the Toyota cars. I don't like the design aesthetic of the head unit frame breaking out of the dash.

And, I may be in the minority here, I hate scrolling through screen menus to get to features. I much prefer a button on the dash for something like turning on my cameras, turning on/off traction control, hazard lights, hill descent control, 4x4, etc.

Here are all the buttons in my truck, and I've circled all of them I don't use with regularity.

    20241230_075511.jpg

    20241230_075426.jpg

Top pic is to manually control the mirror lights. I've used these a couple times when picking up a passenger in the dark. I've used the same function in the screen because it's only usable in park, so they could go.

Second pic moving from top to bottom; there's a parking nav button that's completely useless in the rural setting, the trailer knob for folks that can't figure out how to back a trailer, and the audio source button.
Every other button I either use regularly or would not want to hunt through menus in the screen to find.

As an added bonus I have an instrument cluster screen and my head unit doesn't stick out like somebody's misplaced ipad.

Perhaps the Tesla "auto" is better than others, but I'm usually adjusting my HVAC on a daily basis. Have had to in all my vehicles that had auto climate.

I 100% agree with you on being able to turn off systems like traction control, mirror adjustments, etc. But, there are buttons that I have touched once and never used again. I can thank programable seats/mirrors for that.

I think Elon will fix a lot of the buttons with his implants he's pushing for, so the car will know what you want....then sell you something. /s

    On another note:
I will say the one of the bigger WTF with my '18 Tundra, is they have the BSM and RCTA lights illuminated all the time. They are illuminated to let you know they are on, but if you turn them off, they are still illuminated, now with orange and OFF displayed. I know that is a separate topic as to what we were talking about, but needed to vent that one for a while.

I was just having this conversation with my sis over a knob on the radio. I like having a volume/power knob, but I primarily use the steering wheel controls. The button/knob is just more intuitive in an "emergency/don't need to think about it" situation IMO. Hazzard button I think is always a must and should be backlight red/orange to make it easy to find. Our Sienna has a great one, but in my driving position, it gets hidden behind the steering wheel.

And I'm about 50/50 on using the wheel buttons for volume or using the dash controls. For big changes I always go to the dash. Way quick to spin it up or down a bunch that tap/hold a wheel button.

I’ve always just assumed tactile will always work and screen controls are more glitchy but I don’t have evidence to back that up. Both have been prone to some sort of failure to me in numerous vehicles. (Although more failure of screens than buttons I guess) I enjoy having the feeling of a button vs trying to navigate a screen. I do wish the tesla screen felt more implanted vs afterthought like @GODZILLA referenced.

i’ve never heard of the intuitive gear selecting- never been mentioned the handful of times I have been in a tesla store. It can sense what I need it to do? Ie: get in- it knows to reverse out of a parking space? How does it know when to go back into drive? So many Q’s

thats so neat. I had no idea that was an option. I can’t wait to get one next year. Finally think I have the wife convinced to get the Model Y instead of the 3. Its gonna be her car anyways- but now I’ll certainly want to steal it from time to time.

Another Q for tesla owners. How are lengthy road trips? I do a 12 hour drive (800ish miles) essentially 2x a month. Every time I do- I see teslas charging and think that must suck. Is it feasible to charge up to like 80% quickly and then jet? Or do folks charge to 100% and then continue on?
