Whatever this forum told me to do
lots to digest here, however, I'll drop some thoughts (article below)

the Charging cost of Rivian calls our attention to electricity rates. They must have been spending north of $.40/KwH
as I've detailed in earlier posts, Electric rates dictate mileage efficiency. We see rates of ~$.32 on the Tesla network.

If that same Rivian charged at home, it would have spent 1/3 of the $'s.
that said, traveling in an EV is costly with today's rates. even more so using the slow/unreliable non-Tesla chargers.

one of y'all need to calculate the usage/mileage rates of the EV's. I got lost trying to back into that number for the Rivian.

as far as rate of charge, well, it's not a Tesla or able to use the Tesla network.

and why pick on Rivian? they are already in financial trouble.

back to electric rates...as one could calculate...anything over say $.40/KwH & your are not more efficient than gas.
as long as electric rates stay relatively low, there is a case for EV's.

but we, as grown ass men, know what is going to happen to electric rates.

so, a perplexing article indeed. don't know what was trying to be accomplished.
    yes, EV's are still weird.
yes, the Trx is a gas hog
yes, it takes longer to charge an EV

Yep the trajectory was clear. As offerings expanded and incentives rose more people tried them and a large portion of those people decided they didn't fit their lifestyle and spread the word. They won't give this up easy tho, we still need to spend a few hundred million more on charging stations that don't work or take too long.

The Lightning needed to be cutting edge. It needed to be different like the CT. Not a remake of the f150 but electrified.

I understand the reasoning for accessories and familiarity. It needed its own look and platform. Especially using the Lightning badge.

I'll chime in and argue the opposite...kinda.

the Lightning needed to be as good as an F150.

the flaw was...we all KNOW how good the F150 is.

and now we know the delta that exists between gas & EV.

it was poorly executed & every flaw was clearly visible when viewed thru the lens of the F150.

    and it shit the bed.

I thought it was as good as my lariat. Aside from the range drop from towing or heavy load which honestly applies to any ice or ev with a heavy load or tow. You just have to adjust expectations.

Lightning to me lives up to the F150 name- quick, better infotainment, more storage, full coil suspension, onboard generator still, good towing and payload. I don’t think it did the f150 a disservice it did a lightning name a disservice.

It’s just boring to look at and be in. Should have had a unique platform. They could have made two. A boring clone WT model and then the consumer bad ass model.

I was chatting with someone in real life who was considering one. I asked how would he get it repaired in the future if he got into an accident and they were no longer in business. same with choosing vinfast

This is it in a nutshell. ICE vehicle mpg also goes down to high single digits low teens towing a trailer and goes down in the cold. But there is going to be a gas station within reasonable distance. The fillup will take under 10 minutes And the chances are very low that the pump will malfunction when you get there forcing you to limp to another several miles away.

I don't know that lack of platform differentiation was the problem. As a lifelong pickup owner not super interested in a radical looking platform I personally was more open to it on an emotional level because it looked traditional and not like a space ship. IMHO the problem is these things are being marketed to people whose lifestyles aren't suited to the compromises due to government pressures. The incentives cause people to try them and find the drawbacks and then they turn around and report to the broader free market which is then rebalancing everything.

This is a good option for the guy who sells you your roof and provides the contract before the roof starts, the guy who estimates the addition you want you want to build or the recreational pickup user with a routine that's convenient to charging. The construction higher ups will drive the Lightning with a sign on the door to scheduled estimates and appointments and then will send subcontractor crews with ICE vehicles to haul and town the heavy equipment in and do the actual work.

Various parties tried to make it more than that to more people and it just didn't work. There are forces in play who want everybody in EVs and do not care that they don't work well for a lot of people.
