We don't want your cost of living. Just your kinda money. :p

Seriously though, I know what you mean. Moved from MO to VA 4 months ago. Thankfully I received a very sizeable bump in income; more than enough to offset cost of living where I do now. With that said, where I used to live in MO, one could easily buy a house under $100K, often with an acre or two. (Might need some work on the house itself, but no big deal.)

Same house where I live now? $200K - $250K, easily.

As @Kung said, just the money. Not the crap of CO.

I wish houses were that cheap here. It's almost feels like the housing bubble never burst here.

We purchased ours for $470k? Brand new - fist ones to move in. Now it’s going for $700k. 4 bed, study, basement, etc. (Basement is now finished) fuck this state.

You can have my money, if I can have @nobodyintexas money.

Shit, growing up that and Del Taco were stupid cheap for kids! That being said, I don’t think I’ve eaten at either for many, many, many, manyyyy years.

When you have been fired 3 times in your life....and had to deal with bosses that suck, etc...working hard and FINALLY having FU money is nice.

You protect this position at all cost.

Glommers come after you every day.

so, given my present living conditions, I tend to be called a misantrope. not because I hate humans, but because most humans suck!

    my problem with humanity is:
most folks don't want to hear that good things are happening in your life. I discard those folks.
The folks that gossip about you...discard.

I keep the the folks around that know how to celebrate life - whether it's your own or someone else's. it's a very short list.

    it makes life good.

This forum has more than a few decent folks that can carry on an intelligent, civilized conversation....that's rare. it must be a Tundra demographic thing.

Prop tax on residences is decent here, and there is no prop tax on vehicles (for now).

Flat rate (I think it was $84 this year) to put a license plate on a vehicle.

No state income tax, either. Sales tax is high, though. 9.25%.

Vehicle registration is the property tax on a vehicle.

Watched this with my kids last night. There’s a lot of extremely impressive info in that video.

Did I understand him correctly that they basically invented new battery tech for the CT and that most of the cells in it do not depend on the same rare earth metals that the rest of the EVs do?

One other note from that video: WOW, that Hummer EV is WILDLY inefficient!

the CT is WAY out there. the electrical connections alone are game changing.

That's more to try and lose less of the fuel tax revenue. Same thing here in Wyoming. EVs get a flat fee on top of the normal registration (property tax).

Yeah I guess you can look at every fee as a tax. But it’s not a % tax based on the vehicle’s worth (like property tax on my residence or prop tax on vehicles/boats/RVs in other states). It’s the same flat fee to tag a $100k LX600 as it is to tag a mid-90s beater Camry.

I have friends in Kansas who bemoan the vehicle property tax there. I looked it up, and if I had bought my truck new there, it would have cost me over $800 just to put a license plate on it the first year. That would depreciate for several years down to $250-300, where it would then stay indefinitely. :eek2:

Deal! (Regardless of what @nobodyintexas says. :p )

On a serious note, yeah, we bought our house back in 2008 for $72K. 1100 sq ft, unfinished basement, 2.5 acres. Finished stuff over the last 15 years and just sold it for $215K or so, which allowed us to pay off 1/3 of our current house in VA. It's kinda crazy.

That is how it works here in WY. I just renewed my plate for the first time and it was in the high $700s, but shy of $800. Yours is still a property tax, it's just a flat fee tax instead of a percentage. You still can't use the vehicle legally without paying it.

WA is awesome, besides the politics.

Flat fee for registration, around $100 no matter what it is.
No state sales tax, decent property tax on the East side of the mountains, sales tax around 8%.

Gas tax is the 2nd highest in the country though, but my power rates are almost the cheapest in the country. This is one of the major reasons we're considering an EV

I think I paid around $900 for my renewal. We (CO) also has a $50 EV fee, and I have specialized plates - so there’s another $50 on top

    Whew! That’s really high.

Ehh, maybe we’re splitting hairs here, but I still don’t think I agree. It’s not a property tax if it’s not based on my ownership of the property, and this fee is demonstrably NOT based on my ownership.

I can own it and use it all day long on any private property without registering it and paying that flat $84. The flat registration fee gives me access to public roads. Plenty of friends with farms have beater trucks they use on their own property and don’t bother putting a license plate on. They are not taxed on their ownership or usage of those vehicles; thus it is not a property tax.

    Get spicy! :D
Buying an ev from the Big 3 is like buying the first model year, from a brand new automaker.. hard pass!

I struggle with the tax credit/rebate situation. I'm all about getting the best deal I can, especially when it comes to vehicles. Not taking the $7,500 Gov handout would be admirable, but would it be financially wise?

That's the same way it is here. If you never left private land it doesn't have to be registered.

Are you saying that your buddy in KS has to pay it even if he isn't going to drive it? That's the first I've ever heard of that.

As for the cost here, it's a percentage of the MSRP and it drops each year for the first 5 years and then it is just the fixed cost for the life of the vehicle. It's expensive to register a vehicle here, but we have no state income tax, generally low sales tax (varies by county), and lower property taxes. The true price is paid by living with the wind and the fact that it can snow any day of the year.

I am not sure, but I want to say that yes, if they find out you own it in their state, they come after you to tax your ownership of the property whether you register it for public road usage or not. There’s registration which gives you access to public roads; then there is the ad valorum property tax on top of it. You would just simply not pay the registration fee. The pic below even clarifies the distinction.

This would be for someone with my exact truck living in Wichita. They even give you a handy drop down menu to choose your trim level and drivetrain. Don’t want anyone saying their Pro is an SR. :bananadead:

The tax rebate isn't even a fraction of the problem. The mandate is. You taking or not taking it won't change anything.

Kansas is extra screwed up when it comes to taxing their residents. First off, the state itself is the largest employer. Secondly, there are no other tax revenue streams. You basically exist as a resident to pad the pensions of the people choosing to raise your taxes. And boy do they raise them. Tax increases have wildly outpaced real estate appreciation in the last 20 years.

This is the main reason Kansas is stagnant. Pop growth has been right at 0 (a little less a few years ago, actually). It really is a beautiful state, great hunting (whitetail, mule deer, pheasant, quail, even elk are popping up more lately), lots of views, nice people. But there is ZERO incentive to move there, especially if you have your own business or are near retirement.

They do tax “specials” when a home is built. Buy a house, and pay a special tax that supposedly pays for the sewer and streets where the house is located. That tax runs out after 15-20 years. What happens immediately after? You guessed it: your property is re-assessed to see how much more tax they can get out of you. Most people just roll it into their mortgage, so if the taxes don’t go up when the specials run out, most don’t complain. But the thing is, the tax is supposed to go down. People are too distracted to care.

To tie this back into EVs, KS currently offers a $2400 state tax credit and charges $60-70 more for EV registration (and $30 more for hybrid registration).

Buying a Tesla in Kansas could give you a net $9900 tax credit. Crazy
