'The Gorge' NE New Mexico

 

I'm looking at placing an order from Trickflies.ca for next season (Black Friday sale this week)...to target small Catfish (like the ones I can easily catch with bait). Assiniboine River and Red River are moth murky, muddy waters.

I was thinking:

Clouser Minnows (size 4) - olive, red, yellow
Beadhead Wooly Buggers (size 8) - blk, brn, olive

Anyone have any experience with flyfishing for smaller cats or have recommendations on other flies and/or colors to purchase?

 

Just bought a Tenkara rod. Know a couple local water holes that hold some trout but are hard to fly fish with a normal fly rod. Going to try it out.

Anyone got any suggestions in the U.P.? Looking for next september time frame. Been going out west every year with my Dad and brother. Looking for some new rivers this year.

We had snow here in Flag today...the weekend before I was scouting out spots to fish come May and the temps were stellar.

A few weekends back, my buddy and his GF came down from SLC to try and complete our AZ Wild Trout Challenge...we got skunked on native brooks and on the Apache...winds in the 40-50mpg range made casting damn near impossible on these small waters. Best part was all three getting the Gila.

Bloody hell, Wyoming is stunning.

 

Just bought me a 3wt! Been fishing them w my 5 and its too much for how small the water is.

 

I got a 4wt a few years ago and I use it every time now.

 

At the risk of being 'that guy', i believe only brookies are 'native' to the US, and the rainbows and browns were introduced, making the 'stream bred' ones 'wild' instead of 'native'. I'm in a lot of FB fishing groups and people get really hung up on the verbiage. I couldn't care less, but just an FYI. Also, all flies are 'hand tied' by someone

 

Rainbows , brook trout , cutthroat , golden trout , bull trout , lake trout are all native to the US​

 

Being up north I have never fished for them, but aren't Gila and Apache also considered USA native trout?

i must be thinking of the guys on the Pennsylvania specific groups who get worked up about the 'native' brown trout. my bad...

 

Took a drive to look at my favorite early season creek. Non stop rain f’ed it all up. Ended up fishing a creek about two feet across. At least I got the truck dirty

 

anybody out near Valley Forge National Park in PA? Will have a few hours to fish Valley Creek on Saturday afternoon if anyone has any advice!

 

I picked up a Renzetti Traveler vise. Looking forward to giving it a test run this week.

 

Took a quick overnight to get my wild Apache and the waters did not disappoint.

Now to decide if I want to find a "native brook" for the AZ Native Trout Challenge, or just roll with completing it with the trout species.
