Interesting rod. Big fan of the Helios line. I have 3. What type of water is that rod going to be used on? Big tail water?

Small tail water. It’s close to home, yours as well, and I can sight fish it really well. Especially at winter flows. The 10’ length is popular with euro/Czech nymphers but I’ve never gotten into that. I like to look for individual fish and present my flies directly to them with the 10’ setup.

anybody with experience in salt water? I'm a trout guy, but I'm headed to Fort Lauderdale in a couple of weeks with the family, and hoping to sneak off in the mornings to either the inland canals for peacock bass, or fish in the surf for snook. I have clousers/deceivers/EP Minnows, and gurglers, and my 10' 8wt steelhead rod with floating line and bought some Rio 9' tapered, 25lb leaders labeled for redfish/seatrout. Anybody have any tips? best knot to tie the fly on? never used this big of tippet...

Non-slip loop knot: great action, strength, and easy to tie.

^^^ I use a uni knot quite a bit for all kinds of things trout fishing but a non slip mono loop is my go to for streamer fishing salt or fresh water. Guides that I have used for saltwater like the clinch knot but I think non slip knot has better breaking strength if I remember correctly?

I use perfection loops on my streamers. Not sure how it would do in the salt but I assume it would be fine

Though the best knot can vary by material and pound test, in real world fishing often the best knot is whichever one you can tie and seat consistently while in a rush in low light with willing fish around

I just found my Allen Alpha 5/6 (1st gen I think) from about 2012.

Looking to try fly fishing again. I always wanted to give it a go but never found my groove.

It's paired with an Allen 5/6 rod, 9', 4 pce, high module rod.

    Lookout fish!

Get em! One observation, and I could be wrong. The coloration on the line makes me think it’s a sink tip which has a very specific application. A weight forward floating line is what you’ll use most of the time for typical fly fishing. Might ask somebody in the know to take a look.

    Thanks!

My brother fly fishes in Calgary (I'm in Winnipeg), but I'll talk to him about it before I head out and tangle myself up in line and hooks. He's the one who originally got me interested in it and I've already started asking him more questions and getting him to show me on video how to do stuff/tie etc.

I'll head out to a field shortly and practice my casting (with my cycling glasses on, so I don't whack my eye). I have a few places in mind to try fishing and have a canoe to help get me out in the water.

On that note...who knew there would be a canoe shortage! Not a single canoe on MEC right now. Luckily, we got our Nova Craft Pal Kevlar about 10y ago for 1/2 price.

That looks like an awsome trip! I can confirm the McCloud rainbows being introduced across America, there is a small spring fed creek in sw Missouri called Crane Creek that has a pure strain of them. They were introduced I believe in the 1930s, and have self sustained since then.

Pecos is near Santa fe, and is supposed to be really good fishing at times. Mostly a put and take if I remember right, I've only fished it once and didn't have much luck. If you willing to drive up the road a bit the Rio fishes really good near taos and the "box" area in September. Red river is good fishing as well as the Cimarron. There are a few smaller creeks that fish surprisingly well at time too like cabresto and Rio hindo. And go another 45 minutes north until your almost to Colorado and there is a great little stream called Castillo, with some wild Cutts that will strike (and spit) faster than any fish I've come across, scenery is awsome there as well....might even see a big horn sheep. Good luck, and post some pics.

We actually decided on home basing out of a little place near Amalia. That puts the Castillo right out our back door! Excited for the Cutts! Thanks for the info!

That's awsome you're right in the thick of it. Ute creek has some small Cutts in it as well but are spooked super easy.

For most people an 8.5ft 5wt is a good starting point, Most reels are interchangeable between left and right so not an issue if you are aware of that. I've found that "most" rods are nearly the same except for the really cheap and the really expensive. If you're not sure you're going to like fly fishing I would by me a reasonably priced rod-reel combo. Do buy the nicest 5wt weight forward floating line you can afford, this is one area you don't want to go cheap on. You'll need to buy leaders-tippet-flies-fly box ect. Not the cheapest sport to get into but can be very rewarding.

Any recommendations on fairly inexpensive waders? I only go out 2 or 3 times a year. Mine are leaking like a sieve. I was looking at the entry level Orvis ones for $180.

Check out the stocking foot frog toggs. I've probably spent 60 days fishing in the last 5 years and I'm just now replacing my first pair.

I just returned from almost of month of fly fishing and living out of the back of my truck.

I'm guessing some of the places I fished the water is too low and too warm by now, very sad.

It is sad. There’s voluntary closures that will probably become mandatory here in Colorado. The water temps are just to high. A month is one hell of a nice break!
