If you only view it once per year you could have been compromised for close to a year without knowing until you pull the next record.

I just found Credit Karma that shows you your current credit info for free. Recommended by several at my work.

the one and only place that I have ever used is here:
    https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action

it is totally free, legit, and they don't try to sell you shit that you don't need.

    EDIT:
Although.... that site is being hammered right now and it just went down.....

Yea they knew the company stocks were going to be hit big time when people found out so they cashed in. Probably will lead to some jail time though so they didn't really think that through.

Haven't done it yet. You have up to 30 days after enrollment. The article mentioned it had to be in writing.

Credit Karma is great. It updates your score once a week, but if anything gets added you get an email notification.

I hope so! You and I both know they all knew about it even though they claimed they didn't.

too many posts to read them all so sorry if this has been said. they have a thing where you can enroll for a year identity security but you should read up on it before you commit to it. It has a lot of stipulations. im not signing up for it, id rather take my chances and not be bound to their BS rules.

This is a life long issue. Hackers can sit on your information and slowly sell the information. This in itself is damaging because now you have to worry, when me. Equifax responded horrible. I pay monthly for their monitoring service because they were supposedly the best of the 3. I wasn't even notified. Consumers have such little rights.

The things I remember about the identity protection that turned me off of signing up were that its one year long, if something were to happen anyway, they wont help fix your credit you're just fucked, you also cannot sue or join a civil lawsuit. To me, that makes the whole point of signing up useless. If something happens anyway bc they can't GUARANTEE nothing will happen, they won't even help correct their error. Then you can't sue over their error and your credit being damaged. Shit, might as well take my chances bc it sounds like the identity protection doesn't guarantee protection, then if something happens you're screwed. At least if I don't sign up and something happens I can join a class action lawsuit and attempt to get something out of THEIR screw up. At least that's my perception on the situation.

I put the free freeze on my Equifax report. I opted to put a 1 year fraud alert on the remaining 2. Correct me if I'm wrong, the fraud report will alert any applications or requests. You submit your phone#. This is enough for me. I always thought I was super careful in the way I handle my transactions, but had my debit card # hacked. Put $400 on it. Of course my bank was quick to put a freeze on it and replaced the money quick. To all NC residents, Experian is free to freeze. Not sure about the rest. Ron thanks for the heads up also. I didn't know there was a 4th credit bureau.

my wife follows Brian Krebs. he is a cyber security guy.
    http://www.krebsonsecurity.com/

with this breach, he was talking about other areas that you need to be concerned about and watch out for fraud.

a big threat is criminals submitting a tax return in your name using your information, but then redirecting any return money to themselves. since they have everything that can identify an individual, the IRS accepts the fraudulent return and pushes it through. but then when you go to legitimately file your return, it gets rejected. Then you are stuck fighting with the IRS trying to prove that you did not submit the fraudulent return.

another area is with criminals getting medical services using your information. they could go to a hospital and rack up 100's of thousand of dollars in your name. then when the hospital does not get paid, the bills are sent to collections. Then you get a massive ding on your credit and you have to fight with the 3 credit reporting agencies and prove that you didn't get those services. what is F'd up about this is that there is no way to know if this is happening until it is too late. hospitals don't try to run your credit when you need services. they provide the service, send the bill, and then send it to collections when they don't get paid.

it seems that we need a new (better) way of uniquely identifying individuals. retinal scans? face mapping? voice imaging? i dont know what the answer is.... the criminals always seem to catch up with technology. I don't know if there will ever be a fool proof method of identification. at the very least, the government should reissue social security numbers for all US citizens. with this breach, we will have to be vigilant for the rest of our lives.
