My 02 4.0 ranger had a sound similar to this from noisy lifters after about 200k miles. I added some heavier weight oil and it fixed the problem and generally smoothed it out a bit. Not saying this is the same thing, but maybe try 5W-30 on your next oil change and see what happens. That 0w-20 oil just does not sit well with me at all. They use it only because of the government fuel efficiency noose these days. I noticed my brand new engine sounded way better after i switched to the 5w on my first oil change.

Just a bit of an update.......I'm a dumbass. The Toyota oil didnt fix it either.

Without going into too much detail about me being an air head, it was the skid plate. Apparently those spacers I removed were there for a reason..........the diff was dropped. I didn't know this at the time (2.5" level was already on the truck when I bought it). Carry on everyone, and again a huge thank you to all who commented with ideas and experiences.

Nothing like blatant stupidity keeping you up at night reinventing the wheel lol. I am glad it was simple though.

I swear that skid plate has been the source of some of my nightmares too. The creaking and popping was driving me nuts while low speed turning.

Yep, dealer lied to me once about an oil change that they never completed. They informed me by accident two years later. Shmucks!!

I'm having this same issue but I don't have a factory skid plate. Did that end up being your problem? Sounds like a sticking lifter or something to me but I feel like it would be more consistent if it were.

First thing I do when I pick up a oil change and tire rotation at the dealers is pull the stick and check my marks on the tires. Depending on my clothing I'll wiggle under to put an eye on the filter too.

Putting spacers on the skid plate did not ultimately fix it. It’s is very particular with oil it seems. Castrol and Mobil are the worst. Pennzoil is fine as well as Toyota oil.

I thought maybe my issue was a sticking lash adjuster so I decided to try a cleaner. I added the Lucas complete engine care (says you can use it for the full oil change but I'm using as an engine clean) and I've driven 100 miles with it in there. The valvetrain noise has greatly reduced. I'll be doing a fresh oil change in the next day or 2 with OEM oil. Thanks!

Agree this sounds like a lash adjuster or follower ticking. However the noise receding and then returning is a bit weird. I'd still look for something loose in or near the engine compartment.

If so it’s a different formulation because that tick is non existent without it. I’ve not yet tried 5w-30 but that may be a fix as well.

This thread reminded me of a strange issue I had with a 2010 mustang GT 4.6 3v. The belt (fairly new btw) had mysterious lost a small chunk out of it. Sounded like a metal tapping noise. It would change in loudness slightly.

Think outside the box before you are forced to look inside the engine.

And here I am joining in similar noises on my 2020 but I have to have the hood open or get real close to the passenger side to hear it. I use Costco oil 0w20 I’ll probably switch to a higher weight oil as I live in the south east. Just noisy V8s I reckon.

Yes switch to 5w-30, makes a big difference. The dealer did a free oil change on my 2020 when it was in for a warranty battery, without telling me, and now it's back to sounding like crap. waiting till I hit 30k to do all my fluids at once.

I'm resurrecting this thread as I'm having the same issue. I have the same intermittent "tapping" noise that occurs when the engine is at operating temp. Mine seems to emanate from the drivers side at the front of the engine, however. I have not used any tools to try and diagnose it or track it further. Just using my ear and moving around the engine listening for the spot where it's loudest.

My truck is a 2018 with 80k on the odometer and it just recently started doing this in the past couple thousand miles. Been to the dealership for every service since new but that's soon to run out and I'll start doing my own maintenance. I will bring it up to the dealership next time Im in for service but I'm sure they'll tell me they either can't hear it or it's normal. I just want to address it before my factory warranty is up in case it's something more major. timing chain tensioner problem sort of worries me....

You guys having any more issues with this or is it still pretty much just a nuisance noise?

I think its 0w20. To be honest I'm not even sure because I've never personally changed the oil on this truck..its all been done at the dealership under the maintenance plan. I would assume they put the OEM recommended stuff in, which i think is 0W20.

Got an update for you guys…

took the truck to the dealership, mountain states Toyota in Denver for those that might be curious. I stated the problem and they looked into it. I told them that it wasn’t going to be an acceptable resolution for them to just tell me the tech couldn’t replicate the noise or fit them to say it was “normal operating noise”. They actually came through and owned a mistake they made last time the truck was in for service. Here is the message I got from the service guy handling the appointment:

Your truck is all done!! Engine was missing a VVTI oring, looks like the tech missed that when we did the valve cover gasket 3 months ago. We had the shop manager, quality check everything and replaced the orings and seals as needed!! You're good to go, no cost of course.

glad they found the issue. I hope it didn’t do any damage that will cause issues later. Anybody experienced something similar with any advice?

Just wanted to update this thread after all this time. So a bit over 2 years and 74,000 miles since I started this thread, tried various oils, nuts, bolts, and screws, cleaners, octane boosters, drive belt and tensioners, listening with all kinds of objects and generally driving myself crazy then forgetting about it as life got busy and nothing fixed it. The most anything I did has accomplished was temporary fixing or hiding it. The tapping is still there.

@Rocko9999 wins the award of recognition for correctly identifying the problem and telling me point blank what it was 2 years ago. Of course my hard headed ass just carried on with my own musings, but ultimately had to recognize and accept the correct diagnosis. The truck will undergo a full timing job starting Tuesday and water pump replacement because changing the water pump while its already off would be wise (like listening to Rocko back then would have).

Again just wanted to bring closure to this saga. They say God protects drunks and fools and I must be one (or both) of these because nothing got worse and no valves got smashed or anything.

Awesome of you to update. How did you narrow it down to the tc tensioner?

Drove it around long enough one day at work for it to make the noise and let the mechanic listen to it. He worked for a Toyota dealership for a number of years as well as ran his own repair shop before coming to us. He listened for like 20 seconds and said "thats your tensioner". We went back and forth a bit about how I just replaced that and the idler and he said no, the timing chain tensioner, very common failure on Toyotas. He will be the one doing the repairs.

So about seafoam, I had GM truck that would start to tap like crazy and I would add seafoam into the intake and boom tapping gone. this is my first Toyota 8 cylinder, I do not know even if these engines are direct injected, so I do not know how beneficial seafoam would be in the intake. Also, seamfoam was great in cleaning the throttle body butterfly on GM trucks. They are very sensitive and just a little build up effects idling.

That was definitely the issue. Got a few weeks and 1,500 or so miles on it since and haven’t heard the tapping again.

I have a 2018 Tacoma that has the exact same noise. Dealership replaced the tensioner, chain, and a cam gear. 5,000 miles later the tick has returned. It's going back into the dealer tomorrow morning.
