Well today it threw a bunch of codes for misfire and died. Being towed to the shop as I post. I'll update when I find something out.

The fuel pump went out. I have one ordered and it will be installed next week. Being flex fuel it is dealer only so far and it's around $700. I'll let everyone know if that fixes the issue.

Hmm might check this out. I noticed when real cold jerking from like 2-3 gear going smoothly thru them jerking. Only in morning when not fully warmed up. But as soon as I let up it ends.

Ok guys with the miss I was having, a new fuel pump fixed it. I've ran almost a tank out and no miss. Thanks for everyone's help.

@timebak Have you been able to get this taken care of? My truck has started the same thing.

The fuel pump has been changed and the miss has stopped. Not saying that is your problem but it is something with the fuel delivery system.

Thanks for the heads up. the only off thing I can find about my fuel system is that my ethanol % is way higher then it should ever be. I never use e85, I have also found ethanol free gas and it still shows a high reading.

The sensor in the tank is most likely going out

I'll run several tanks in a row of ethanol free fuel but the ethanol reading will still show anywhere from 12% to 70% ethanol! My mileage is even worse now at 9 mpg unloaded/not towing!!

The way it works is when you run high eth. through the computer tells the engine to give more fuel per stroke. So you're running rich. The sensor is on the pump that detects eth. My pump was 700. I have put about 10,000 on my truck since the swap and not the first surge.

Some are saying that tundra fuel pumps don't have an ethanol sensor, that ethanol % is a calculated value. So is the pump going bad or is my high ethanol % a software problem?

Look the pump up. The flex fuel pump has the sensor.

My 2011 flex fuel is surging only at 2300-2400. Won’t do it before that rpm or after. Does it under a load more than not. Is this what yours was doing Medic1?? I sent u a pm also. Truck starts and runs fine other wise.

At this range and especially under load is when it has the most demand for fuel. I didnt pay attention to rpm with mine.

Medic1, do you happen to have the part number of your fuel pump? Possibly on some paperwork where the dealer made the repairs? I'm gonna order a new pump but want to get the correct fuel pump.

Ordered my fuel pump today after returning one from my local dealer ship. I paid $580 for the one from my dealership. Took it back and ordered from a dealership in Richmond Virginia. $364 total including shipping. I'm gonna pull the bed and install it when it arrives. I have read the ethanol percentage is read by calculations made by multiple sensors. But I guess it could be a sensor on the pump. These trucks have an ECU just for the fuel pump. Craziness!

When I did my research the cheaper pump is not comparable with the flex fuel system. Please share if it works so others will know.

Fuel pump was shipped today. I'll try to put it in this weekend as long as it arrives in time. Did the $700 you paid include labor for replacing it?

Fuel pump was delivered today. Exact same pump assembly for $220 less by ordering through a different dealership. I had to wait a few days to get it but it's the exact same thing. Toyota oem pump. It's going in this weekend I hope.

Fuel pump installed. Exact OEM replacement. Cost me $364 and installed it myself. Word of advice, do not pull the bed! The fuel pump is not accessible by pulling the bed. The fuel tank has to come out for fuel pump replacement. Alcohol density reading was 20% before replacement. 9.8% after replacing the pump. I'll give it some time before saying it's fixed though.

Update on my problem. I'm still having bad surging for the first few miles in any weather below 50 degrees F, and also while towing, going uphill at around 2,200 to 2,500 rpm. My dealer has been worse than useless, charging me about 100 bucks a pop for useless scans that don't find a f'n thing. Another dealer re-flashed the ECU and my mileage is up to about 12.5 not towing and about 10.5 towing.

Your findings on the fuel pump are interesting. I'd like to know if the new pump solved your problem.

I found this thread because I started having the same(ish) problem about a month ago. I had been noticing that there was a slight lack of power through the 2000 RPM range but didn’t think much of it. Last weekend it was erratically feeling like I lost fuel pressure for a split second here and there between 2000-3000 RPMs. It was just enough to really notice, kind of like it was "letting off" for a shift point but wouldn’t (didn’t need to) shift. This only happens when I am gradually accelerating between 2000-3000.

I have cleaned the MAF and TB, checked transmission fluid, reset the ECU and checked for vacuum leaks and it is still there. It’s difficult because it will only do it under a load, neutral revving doesn’t work so I don’t think it’s a misfire. :frusty:

Mine is not rhythmic, its erratic and just fast enough to feel. So does this seem to be the same issue, or do I need to continue my search?

Since its been a couple months since the last update, is there anything new on the fuel pump fix?
