Hey all, I have an '05 Stepside which has and is a great truck. A couple months back it randomly would die on me just before I stopped as I approached a stop. Took it in and found it had a bad mass air flow sensor. Truck has been running great since then. Now three times in about 3 weeks it will quit when I start to leave from a stop. It starts back up with no problem but that initial throttle input is when the engine quits. Again not very often but at random times. Mechanic who replaced mass air sensor says there is nothing in the log showing a problem and no codes to help trace the issue.

Has anyone experienced this with their truck and have any ideas of where to start looking to diagnose this issue?

When was the last time you did a general tune up? Spark plugs, clean throttle body, air filter, run some injector cleaner through it, I'd start with those couple things.

Well I have done parts of that. Throttle body was cleaned but injectors have not had a cleaner run through them. Will do it now. Spark plugs were changed about 4 years ago so will check them now. Air filter needs to be checked as it has been awhile since I changed that. Thanks for the ideas!

    Skip the injector cleaner.

You cleaned the throttle body - did you remove the negative battery cable afterward to force the ECU to relearn?

When was the last time the timing belt was changed? If less than 10k-20k miles ago, have you verified the person who changed it routed the crank position wire harness correctly, and it's not getting clipped by a belt or pulley? This is a common mistake, and movement in the harness after being damaged will cause the fuel pump to shut off.

Critical step on EFI engines. Any time you touch anything related to spark/air/fuel flow. Too many people fail to realize it.

According to my notes, when the throttle body was cleaned they did do a relearn on the ECU. Belt was changed in 2021 (30K miles ago). Spark plugs changed then with complete tuneup.

I'd check the crank position sensor harness. The 'So you just bought a 1st gen Tundra' sticky thread has pics of how it should be routed, and what misrouted looks like. Search that 1st page for the phrase "correct routing"

Hi Shifty, I went to that link and boy does it have a lot of great information! I did the search function and it took me to the top of that page but I couldn't find a link that said "correct routing" or a link to the pictures. I did find the statement on routing the crank position wiring harness but no link. Can you tell me under what subject heading that link is under as I must be looking right past it?
