So far just tint and chrome blackout, scared to do anything else because of this engine issue
So I have been a beloved Titan fan for years I just had my 19 midnight Edition totaled because some young girls slammed on her Brakes in front of me I don't understand how it was totaled as a year ago a deer hit me and damaged the front grill driver side light and entire driver side had to have two doors replaced so just everything from the front left all the way down which I think the insurance company screwed me on because that would mean that the total damage was around $19,500 if the value of the truck was almost $30,000 but it's already gone and I had to hurry up and replace it so I was afraid with this being the last model year of the Titan getting another one figured Toyota reliability value retention Tundra was the way to go but now all I'm hearing about is this engine failure and have seen supposed cases on 2024s can anyone else confirm this I'm just wondering if I should get rid of this truck or roll the dice

    Welcome.

If you’ve already bought the truck then keep it, drive it and enjoy it. All vehicles have their quirks and flaws but I love my 2023.

That's just a pretty big quirk and flaw and honestly I'm really enjoying the truck but seeing some of this nightmare of what people are going through it's very concerning I know markets are always changing I got a great deal on my midnight Edition Titan had 20,000 miles on it for 30 grand so the payments were super comfortable Insurance wasn't bad but just switching car payment amount has more than doubled insurance is already going up I'm a 40 year old man I just looked at new quotes for insurance and they're around $750 a month that's a damn car payment so between that and worrying about the engine blowing up on me and then the dealership maybe fixing it I'm just not made of money would be a lie to say if it's not a struggle so I thought I was making a smart choice going with new instead of used or the last of the model line with the Titan but this is quite a worry for me I depend on it it's the biggest most expensive tool in my Arsenal and without it all the rest are useless if I can't get to the job can't get the tools to the job I'm not making money to pay for the truck so I was just looking for other outlooks some have told me to dump it some have told me to keep it

Good looking titan, yes there have been 2024 engine failures. Are you looking to keep the truck long term? If you had to give the truck up for a few months while it gets repaired would you be OK? Do you take long trips or offroad or drive through remote areas where being stranded is especially a problem? If they widen the recall and you can't trade the truck in and its value drops would you mind?

Are you absolutely in love with the tundra? The answer of to keep it or not keep it depends on those answers.

If you love the truck and don't wander far from getting prompt AAA service and don't mind the risk of it being in the shop for awhile keep it.

If you depend on the truck and if it goes down it would screw you, dump it.

The percentage of trucks experiencing catastrophic failure are still relatively low. It’s concerning, but Toyota seems to be taking care of the issues and making fixes where needed. Historically Toyota is mostly reliable and takes care of significant issues.

Financially, you’ve already taken a big hit to value the minute you drove off the lot. If you can’t afford it, then it may be best to sell it and find a good used truck that meets your needs, but I don’t think the recall and issues reported on these trucks should be your reason for getting rid of it

Oh I know driving off a lot depreciation starts immediately but I absolutely planned on keeping it long-term I planned on keeping my Titan for the rest of my life and then buying another vehicle once it was paid off that was the idea with this as well but if it's not going to make it that's my concern my dealership offers engine warranty for a lifetime and I also bought the extended warranty so like pretty much clean myself out just getting another set of wheels I was trying to make the best decision in a hurry because rental had to go back and then insurance company was rushing me to take the Titan even though it was still fully functional was not leaking any fluid to me it was just aesthetic and I cannot see how the value of damage was $19,000 but what do I know just comparing it to the deer accident the damage was nowhere near but I just thought that it's not the first year of the tundra figured the problems would be worked out but I see a lot of cases it seems of this same engine failure with the 24 so it's a worry I was just about to lift it and it's not just for looks it's for purpose built I do construction sometimes I need to get off road get over stuff and I don't want to be grinding up my undercarriage and from what I've seen how they fix the problem relying on technicians at a dealership I find that pretty scary because in my experience most of them have been worthless I've done all my own work because of that but I don't want to do anything to this that could void the warranty so it's a tough spot to take the loss and try to find something else or ride it out and hopefully it lasts

20230825_103818.jpgyep she was great! I was expecting maybe $8,000 worth of damage 10 compared to how bad it was when the deer hit me in the whole driver side was destroyed from the grill light replaced both doors the whole left side so when the adjuster called said man your truck looks brand new but it's totaled yeah it was quite surprised

My son had a Jetta totaled that wasn’t much different. Body shop adjuster told me the salvage values are so high now because of supply chain disruptions with replacement parts that insurance companies find it more financially advantageous to just write you a check for the book value now. They get a lot of it back selling the car for parts. Sucks if you ask me.

If it’s me, I’m keeping the truck. Chances are still in your favor that you’ll be able to drive this truck for a long time. If you’re worried about putting too much into it then you’ll need to find the economical options to meet your needs and not necessarily wants, I could easily spend 20k building this into a dream truck but I don’t have the means. The stock tundra is quite dependable and there tons of options to make it even more capable.

if you need a lift, stick to 3” or less to minimize the strain or additional parts needed to correct suspension geometry.

No I wasn't following close at all but that's the problem you try to leave a car or two space in between and some asshole always tries to get in that little Gap like it's going to get them where they're going faster that and it was a case of rubbernecking really nothing to see there was no accident there was a tractor trailer pulled on the side of the road but for some reason everyone had to slam on their brakes and look over at it and that heavy Titan just didn't stop that quick even with the power stopped drilled and slotted rotors but I also carry around probably a good thousand pounds of tools and bag full of flex volt batteries that probably weighs 100 lb itself

@OP hint - if you say “period” and pause for a moment, your phone turns the word period to “ . “

Unless you’re uncomfortable with that word . In which case you do you.

I feel like it's a shame Toyotas known for reliability and it's also not the first model year so I was hoping they work The Kinks out didn't want to get the last model year Titan because it'd be the same boat parts are going to be expensive or hard to find figured Thunder's been around forever it's going to be around tried to make a smart decision and that's all I was looking at was three inch either the TRD lift just to keep it all Toyota that's more than high enough for me to get over the stuff that I occasionally have to get over but really I had the Rough Country 3-inch on the Titan and I never had any issues with it and it's half the price of the TRD lift I mean with me yeah it's all about functionality purpose-built I would love to make it you know dual exhaust bigger turbos just dream truck like you said but who the hell's got the means for that inflations of 20% in the last 4 years

But actually it was cracked from the outside now that I think about it again it was still completely smooth on the inside so maybe a piece of debris hit it

Also pretty sure the insurance company just screwed me on it they didn't show me any pricing for repairs they didn't offer me any buyback options they didn't offer me a way to just keep making my finance payments and fix it myself they just called said it's totaled to take your tags and release it I'm pretty sure that's not how that's supposed to go

I thought I wanted the TRD lift too but ultimately decided against it. My dealer wanted $4500 for installation. Toyota seems to address everything you would need to correct geometry with their lift but the end of the day the cost is too much for what you’re getting. There is a lot of good after market products available. If you just need clearance and not necessarily improved suspension the you may want to check out Westcott Designs preload collar lift kit. I’ve read a lot of good things

I will check that out thank you like I really am I want to keep the truck it's grown on me since having it a month but then all the sudden all the stuff coming out the scaring the hell out of me I'm a bad luck kind of guy so I could just see me getting super screwed but at this point no matter what I do I'm getting screwed if I sell it it's a loss if I keep it might be a loss I don't know my dealer would do the whole TRD for about $5,800 I'm saying too bad but that's a lot for three inches considering rough countries got one for 1500 and that's not spacers that's Springs shocks struts but like you said the Toyota one comes with the full package axles everything so I just don't know man

I hear you. I haven’t decided on what to do with suspension either. I’m working on upgrades in phases and wanted to get the look I wanted quick. Ended up negotiating a free 2” level from the shop I got upgraded wheels and tires from. Now I can run 35s and have a little bigger truck while I save up some more money and figure out what my end game is. I have the off-road package too so I feel like I have some added capability already
