My standby is a portable 5KW gasoline wired to the house (yes done right and no I am not going to back feed the lines and light up a lineman). The first named storm of hurricane season that looks like it is coming my way, I fill up my ten 5 gallon cans with non-ethanol and add stabil. I also top off the 63 gallon tank in my Boston Whaler. I use about 7 gallons a day keeping two refrigerators going plus lights, fans and a couple of window units. For Isaac, I was out of power for five days.

My generator will not push my central AC systems. I keep two 8000 BTU window units around for emergencies. Worth every penny when your AC breaks on a Friday afternoon in August in addition to when we loose power.

Even if you did backfeed your secondary lines, if a Lineman doesn't use Lock out, tag out and grounds....pretty sure they shouldn't be a Lineman:thumbsup:

My electrical knowledge stops around the meter but good to know. My system is set up so that I have one live circuit from the line with a spotlight shined through my bedroom window. That way when the power comes back on, I know.

I am actually impressed you were concerned and took the necessary steps to prevent an accident, when many others would not.

Some people don't know, transformers work both ways. You can get primary voltages from backfeeding the secondary.

Even grounded, I have seen the generator just keep on going. We would put hot dogs on the primary side of a transformer for training. Hook up a generator and watch the hotdogs cook.
