Tesla blew it with the cyber truck. That thing looks horrible.

I still think it's a joke to see how many fanboys buy it anyway.

Solid state batteries are in development and Toyota seem to be ahead in that game. They say a prototype vehicle on the road by next year, with a 300 to 600 mile range and a 10 minute charging time. This however does not address the need for grid infrastructure. If you are going to propel a vehicle for 300 miles with a 10 minute charge how much current would be needed from the charger even at high voltages. You can’t ever get out more than you put in. I’m not sure high voltage battery charging would be safe for the general public to deal with. Lower voltages would mean even higher current through the cables to charge. Don’t forget pure electric cars are from 400 to 800 volt battery packs hybrids are usually around 200 volt. One advantage solid state batteries have over Li ion is that they do not need the complex cooling systems also they are smaller and lighter.
I’m really not seeing adoption of this technology any time soon across the USA. Maybe in urban areas but we aren’t Europe are we.

I have solar at my house, I produce about 130% of the electricity I use, and I keep my thermostat at 65 24/7 in Southern California. If I get an electric vehicle, I can plug it in to my RV power outlet and get a full charge every night for free. Every year I get a check for about $500 from my electric company for my overproduction of electricity.

So while it may not make sense to you, an electric vehicle would probably be great for me.

@The Californian that would work nicely, makes the expense of solar power worth it.

Need faster charging, more charging options and a range above 650 miles to be practical.

Towing will quickly drop that 650 mile range to sub 400 - unless your towing a generator and charging station - you’ll need to stop along the way or have charging at your destination for most users.

As a “delivery” vehicle current tech will work - but day to day weekender, no.

Solid state batteries and better range have been a year away since the EV1 was released in the 90s.

I like you will remain skeptical and keep driving my port injected V8
All these new technologies electric vehicles and direct injection engines are being forced upon us.

It would be great if the EV Truck manufacturers actually started, ya know, making trucks instead of just talking about it.

Electric infrastructure aside, the only way electric vehicles will take over gas is with battery packs that can be swapped out at charging stations. This is not likely to happen since the cost of the batteries is such a large portion of the vehicle’s price tag. I don’t think that many buyers would be willing to pay 3-4 times the cost of the batteries up front.

Let's also remember something has to generate that electricity. We've seen how successful (not!) places have been in going "green" to generate all of their electricity. These are the same places, same mentality, that are pushing electric vehicles.

Maybe they don't want us to be able to travel?

not even on a dare.... not in the least interested in one... not practical at all... I drive too many freakin miles...the down time to charge would kill me... I live in Tx and my work takes me to SA, HOU, Austin live in Frisco... not to mention the drives I have to take to art galleries in NM.. I don't like to stop especially for a "charge up" may not get the best mpg but my time is more valuable.. my 19 has 68k on it now... my 08 had 300k when I traded her off for this one... just not worth it

Get your brother or sister in law to get an electrician to install a proper 240V outlet. Bonus if they can avoid telling the electrician it's for a Tesla or they might magically get charged a higher price for the installation. She'll have a full charge every morning vvv

I wish. Ive got a spare ‘04 sequoia for parts, and have wanted to make the tundra a push-me, pull-me twin-engine several times. Everyone keeps telling me how dumb that sounds, and i know, but i wanna.

    Did it get stolen?

But i would rather have that truck body and a tube chassis hunkered down on rx7 subframes and a rowdy ported na 1.3.

Mazdarati was a Motortrend "Roadkill" car and it was stolen while they were shooting an episode around it back in 2018-ish. I don't recall the exact year. To my knowledge, the last "fan reported" sighting said it was leaving the US going south.

I like the idea of the electric vehicle and I’m digging the alpha wolf and the Atlis XT. The only really holding me back is the charging infrastructure and they need to figure out a way for the batteries to be efficient in extreme cold temps, -20 and colder.

I am very excited about the electric car revolution. Bring on the instant torque and the extra storage space in the same size package. Bring on the home charger and better infrastructure.

I love the technology. I certainly think there is a place for it in the market. Local delivery vehicles and even local contractors etc. can certainly use it. I see how our trucks sit and idle on job sites all day to keep the AC running or guys stopping to make a quick delivery and just don't even think to turn the truck off. Driving around on site at 5 mph in a V8 in sand gives us about 5PMG. In reality the trucks are out there all day on site but they don't really move all the time, and certainly don't do 200 or 300 miles a day, maybe 50 at the most. Our trucks are all parked overnight so they could be fully charged in the morning; if the battery will last a whole day then it will work great for our needs.
On the other hand, if you do long distance traveling and don't know where you will be at the end of the day or after 300 miles, then battery life will be a limiting factor and then ICE or at least a hybrid is a much better option. There is a place for both/all technologies.

a quick look at energy density (in MJ/kg)
    Gasoline: 46.4
    Diesel: 45.6
    Cng: 53.6
    Lithium: .36 - .875
    NiMH: .41
    Lead-acid: .17

imagine the weight of the battery compared to a fuel tank. 85kwh tesla battery is 1200 lbs.

And with a range of less than 300 miles, which at 20mpg is 15 gallons or a little over 100lbs.

Electric cars are the future. For the slow kids.

Energy density doesn't tell the whole story.
Electric motors are at least 80% efficient, so those .36-.875 MJ/Kg are mostly converted to actual mechanical work, this is how an 11kW battery gives 300 miles of range; while ~70% of gasoline's energy is lost as heat and noise, so you only have ~12 MJ/Kg to work with.

Electric cars are the present for FAST kids, just not for those trying to get far or do heavy work.

    Exactly.

ICE are incredibly in efficient. Just look at all the wasted heat energy. I am actually surprised we never figured out to harness some of that energy instead of desperately trying to dissipate it.

What has an 11kwh battery and 300 miles range without a built in generator?

it takes the ford mach e 88kwh. And the battery weighs 1100lbs.
