I recently ordered the PowerStop KOE15314DK rear brake kit for my 02 Tundra. When I took the drums out of the box I noticed that one drum had a smooth finish while the other still had a rough finish on the exterior, both insides are the same. Both boxes have the same part number and UPC. Are they supposed to be this way? Does one go on the driver side and one for passenger? I included pictures for reference. (I already painted the drums so it’s a little harder to tell)

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Looks like they were each simply cast using different molds. The machined surfaces are or should be really close to identical.

There was an update in August of '02 for the 03+ model. Can not remember the exact specifics but the newer stuff is fine for the older models but not the other way around, so you should be ok, even if its mismatched. I did the same thing last spring and had to return the drums. I have a 03 AC that was built in August of 02 (yeah, couldnt have made it easy for me in that sense) and it had the update...

Assuming you already know, but maybe not. The threaded holes allow you to use bolts as a pushing force to remove the installed drums which in many cases require some effort to get worked off. If you run bolts in those holes gently while tapping on the drum with a hammer they should slowly come off. PB blaster or other penetrating oil won't hurt either.
