Hmmm, I don't like that. Like to coast anytime I can. Can this be disabled? I know on some EVs it can be. Forget what it's called though.

A customer of mine has a Rivian. He had it on reserve since 2019 and just got it this year.

I have had a Cybertruck reserved and will be building the tri-motor once I get the notice from them to start.
Not sure if I will keep it or flip it. We will see how the market is on them when the time comes. I am anticipating mine in early 2024, but Tesla is just barely getting the metal casting machine from Italy.

I like the thought of 500mi range and 0-60 in 2.9sec. lol. It has a 14000lb tow capacity also, though I am not sure how much that diminishes the range, but Im really not pulling any trailers anymore, much less that amount of weight.

Either way, Im pretty sure it will be better all around than the Lightning, even a Lightning with an added range extending plug-in battery pack that they are supposed to be selling soon.

@Orracle Did you have a chance to try out the driver assistance tech on the Rivian? Never hear much about it and wondered if it works as well as Tesla's.

Regenerative braking. My wife’s Bolt has it and it does regen quite a bit on long downhills. They are fun to drive but range anxiety is real to me. For instance, Lake Tahoe (Truckee area) is 68 miles from my house. But it takes 113+of EV range since it’s almost all uphill. It only take 28 on the way back. So my wife has been expanding her range circle slowly. But it’s an uneasy feeling. Cars parked at chargers and left for hours, ICEd out, etc. They are awesome, just not sure it’s quite there yet.
The Rivian is sweet. In Rocklin they are opening a Lucid dealer. I saw one the other day and it’s way better looking in person. I think the range is 500? But they ain’t cheap.

Range is the biggest killer. Out here in the beginning of winter I see teslas on the side of the road dead because the battery life’s so much less than in the summer and people don’t expect it to drop that much on their commutes

Whatever this forum told me to do
as someone who has suffered this malady, you are dead on.

we are conditioned, by ~150 years of ICE engines, to have to wait on a certain RPM range.

EV's blow that away. the second you step on the go-pedal.

Max TQ from 1 rpm is completely foreign to folks that have not given it a try.

for example....go have fun & test drive a Tesla Model 3. I would say test drive a Rivian, but I'm not sure it's readily avail yet across the nation.

    EV's are great commuter vehicles.

    for truck stuff....not quite yet.

Pin to drive. Takes 5 seconds to enable it, then once enabled, you just hit your pin everytime
On the app, the owner could have (most likely) thrown it into valet mode which will cut the power to half, limits the speed, locks the frunk, disables home address, etc

I think they look sweet. The main concern I would have is where do you service it or take it for warranty work?

Their dealerships and service locations are scarce. I’d check that out first for anyone thinking about getting into one.

You could change the oil on one pretty easily yourself. Don't even need a tool for it.

Oh, I know it. I'm a damn space cadet. Forget stuff all the time, but I look like a genius with a photographic memory when compared to the general population. I've never once walked into a crosswalk and almost been hit by a bright blue 5000+ lbs truck with an aftermarket exhaust, but while driving said truck I've had to stand on the brakes for lots of dolts who wake up in a new world every time they blink.

Back to the Rivian, @Orracle , how was the comfort in it? Good seats? Interior space compared to your Tundra?

Hell yes. We are waiting on our R1S in blue. Hopefully some time next year. Not in a rush since we have a New RAV4 that we'll give to my MIL when the time comes. Keeping the tundra for utility.

The seats were extremely comfortable. The ride I found to be a bit more harsh then the Tundra, I'm sure it had to due with the smaller tires compared to the tundra. Interior space felt bigger inside than it looks from the outside. I believe the Tundra is more spacious though. The rear seats have less headroom than the front due to the pass through storage on the bed. Seems to raise the seat height some. Our friend is 6'3" and had no problem fitting up front. Plenty of leg and headroom. In the back seat his head touched the roof. Also not as much rear seat legroom as in the Tundra crew cab but more than the double cab Tundra.

I beg to differ politely. Range people could tolerate if it wasn't long charging time. If it took couple minutes to fill her up and plenty of spaces to do it, people would tolerate.

Some might, but not all. How many of us buy the Tundra with the 38 gallon gas tank because we want the added range over the smaller tank? I know I did. I gave up the extra seat in front, which I wanted, in order to get the larger tank.

We still have a long way to go before electric vehicles can replace internal combustion. When cars were first invented they had the same growing pains. The improvements in vehicles and infrastructure to support them has taken over 100 years to get to where we are now. Electric vehicles won't take that long, but it won't happen overnight.

Couple bought a gimmick for some real workout. Nothing wrong with electric to run around town, but not towing.

Thinking about it, electric pickup would suit me well!! I make less than 100 miles a day and go to work pretty light!

Couple Towed Trailer Behind $80,000 Electric Truck, Had to Stop Every 100 Miles on 2,700-Mile Trip
    [IMG]
By Lexie Purdy July 8, 2022 at 4:52pm
Instagram account. The expedition amounted to almost 2,700 miles and 27 charging stops.

According to Car and Driver specs, the R1T has 314 miles of range — not bad. However, this is when the truck is not towing anything. Many Americans do, in fact, use their trucks for truck things. It is not absurd to demand a pickup be able to do so.

    Trending:
Governor Confirms Mass Casualty Crash on Highway; Freakish Weather Blamed
The couple pulled their Ford Mustang Shelby GT on a flat-deck car-hauler trailer. The total weight — including the Rivian, the couple, their luggage and the loaded trailer — came out to 14,260 lbs. The approximate weight of the loaded trailer was a bit over 6,000 lbs — a standard load to tow.

On the first leg of the trip, the couple logged nearly 2,000 miles from Los Angeles to Sikeston, Missouri, with 20 stops to charge the Rivian — for an average of 100 miles between charging stops.

On the second leg, they traveled 695 miles and stopped seven times to charge up, again averaging 100 miles between charging stops.

The voyage was obviously very painful. The couple spent an estimated 10 to 20 hours charging their Rivian during the cross-country trip.

Are electric trucks ready for real-world use?
    Yes No

Some pitstops were better than others. Fast chargers are able to charge at 150 kW or even 350 kW, but the couple noted “one charger with a low output of just 30 kW,” according to The Fast Lane Truck.

Not only this, but the couple had to either take up the entire charging station area sideways, park with the trailer hanging far out, or even unhitch and leave the trailer until the truck was charged.

This hair-pulling story of a road trip highlights the issues facing electric vehicles. Never mind the fact the average electric car costs $56,000; they do not work as efficiently as gas-powered vehicles.

And yet liberal politicians do not let up on their push to get all Americans to drive EVs.

The technology is not there, and while politicians in D.C. may not understand this, these trucks are not ready for real-world use.
