Does the white paint on these trucks just suck ass or is it just me???

I've looked at two different white Tundras, a 2008 with 68k on it, obviously somebody's horse hauler, I bet every one of those miles was towing an overweight gooseneck trailer behind it. The other one was a 2012 with about 100k on it.

Both of these trucks the white paint just sucked ass IMO. They were faded out as hell, all chalky, glazed over. Just seems like Toyota uses the cheapest ass white paint assuming only contractors buy white, who cares what it looks like.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by my current car, a 1992 SC300, original pearl white paint. Granted it has spent about 90% of its life in a garage, but still for a car with 104k miles, the paint is mint. You can swim in the depth of that pearl white, its just beautiful how rich that color is, and also how it shifts from white to a more pearlish sort of cream color depending on light.

I know Lexus is premium quality, but when the paint on a 26 year old car looks 100x better than the paint on a 6 year old truck, its like WTF is Toyota painting these white trucks with????

White does that if they never get waxed.

I wax my a lot it looks great my truck is 3 years old shiny just like new, but if a car paint is not taken care of not kept clear and waxed and Texas heat will do a number on paint really quick. But you said your Lexus was parked in a garage most of it life that will make a big difference.

Yeah I think that 3 stage paint job on my Lexus has jaded me into not buying a white Tundra. Even new ones, the paint doesn't look as deep as that 25 year old car.

Brother-in-laws white 2003 Taco has not held up over the years; never covered or waxed, very chalky looking.

From what I've seen, Toyota does not know how to paint the color white. Just about every 10 +/- year old white Toyota has the chalky, faded look.

I'm sure some of that is basic maintenance (i.e. waxing) but the problem seems to be much worse with Toyotas then any other manufacture that I've noticed

Toyota does not clear coat white, black, or red from what I understand. So if they aren't waxed regularly, they will get that chalky look to them. I have two white Toyota's and one is chalky, one isn't, they are 2002 and 2003 models. I can make them both look brand new however using a normal buffer. I can even make them look new with an orbital buffer if I work at it.

The point is, it's all in how they are maintained, just like most other stuff. However, I know that white pearl color that Lexus has and it's a beautiful color.

I have also heard that the white is not clear coated. Some single stage base and clear mix. Not sure if it is true, but yes, I have noticed many faded white Toyotas also.

I have an eight-year-old Scion XB that my wife drives. It’s white and still looks great. I keep it waxed. I don’t put any more effort into it then I would cars of another color. The only part that’s failing on it is the dealer added items that were clear coated. The beautiful thing about no clearcoat, is you can usually bring it back to life. Once a clearcoat fails, time for a respray.

It’s because they don’t expect anyone to keep a white truck for long. Guys start missing sex pretty quickly.

Got a chalky looking white 2007 Sequoia sitting in the drive. No clear coat paint. Funny, the plastic painted parts have all held up much better. I have to admit, we have been bad about waxing it.

You’re also comparing trucks that have been used for their intended purpose to a beauty queen kept in a garage.

The white is indeed single stage. Every few years it needs pretty extensive compounding to get the shine back. I'd say 90% of Super white Toyotas I see more than 5-7 years old are chalky.

To me, it sounds like they chose not to care for their paint. Mine is only four (4) years old and shines nicely...but I take care of it- inside and out.

I think I'm going to have it ceramic coated next. These trucks are a PITA to handwax lol. I've been using detail spray in-between washes for the most part.

So basically it sounds like your decision to buy a truck is/was:
    1. Has to be White
    2. Tundra

If not white, then no Tundra?

Like someone said above, you're comparing trucks that were used for intended purposes vs. a Lexus (which is already going to have better paint/coat to start with) which sat in the garage. Go with a different color or yeah get another truck brand in their white and enjoy!

I took my truck to get it detailed I only had them was and wax it, very disappointed they only used spray wax that doesn’t last. They just wanted me to keep coming back. So I use
Mequiar’s wash and wax and follow with pre wax polish and them Liquid wax it really makes the white shiny. All Meguiar’s Ultimate products.

Nah, I was just bitching. I don't want white after looking at one that's 5 years old and how it doesn't hold up.

Makes sense what people are saying if its a single stage paint with no clear coat, those get chalky/faded real quick if you don't keep up on it with regular washing and waxing. I thought it was a base/clear coat paint(which shouldn't do that chalky thing after 3-5 years), didn't think any manufacturers were still using single stage paint.

Super White was Single Stage and no clearcoat. Does not hold up well without maintenance.

    Super White 2 is basecoat/clearcoat.

Not sure when they switched on the Tundra but I think it was mid 2000's like 2014 or so.

Maybe so, I used to detail cars back in high school and college, I kind of have an eye for this sort of thing and hate crap paint jobs. Just bugs the crap out of me, I'm the type who almost never runs his car through a car wash, waxes the thing every 6-8 weeks. That's if its a car with a nice paint job and something I care about. My old 1993 pickup that I paid $600 for, well, I did wash the salt off it after a bad snow storm a couple times. I felt bad that my $600 truck had ZERO rust on it.
