Make sure you correct for the size of your tires. I have 275/70R18 on mine and my trip computer will consistently read low, by as much as a full mpg.

Yup, that'll probably do it.
My 2018 TRD OR is stock and I'm averaging 17-18mpg. I averaged 12.2mpg towing almost 8000lbs of tractor and trailer even. She goes good. And honestly, if it's between crap gas mileage or thousands in repairs.. I'll deal with the crap gas mileage. If I was worried about that I would've got a prius.

Welcome from Alabama. If you want to get to 50 posts in a hurry, start a new thread about no transmission cooler or how bad your gas mileage is....on second thought, don't do that. Here I am trying to make you a bunch of enemies. Keep em straight up there in Portland.

Wait this might be a silly question, but do my replies count as posts, or do I need to start 50 threads? haha

I have enough enemies here in Portland. I don't need anymore. Apparently my 10 month old baby is racist cause she has light skin. I just... I just don't know if I'm living in reality anymore?

Yes, it is crazy everywhere right now. Pretty sure any replies count, not threads started but I have been wrong before.

You have to find out how much the odometer is off by. One of the easiest ways to do it is get on the interstate, set your trip and then compare to the mile markers. If you drove 20 miles on the interstate, and your trip reads 18, then you simply multiply your odometer by 1.11 at fillups and use that to hand calculate mpg. You can also use a GPS or your phone to achieve the same thing. My odometer correction is 1.03.

Hats off to you guys that do the calculation. That's too much damn work for me. I just don't care enough to try to figure it out. It won't make me do anything differently whether I know the exact mileage or not.

I think I'm just gonna do it the easy way and fill up, see how many gallons I used, then divide that by the amount of miles I've driven on my Trip A meter that I reset at every fill up, lol... Your way sounds too smart for me!

Up to you. If I'm going to waste time calculating mileage, I want it to be accurate. It's not hard. Once you do it a few times, you'll have a pretty good idea of how your actual mileage compares to the computer mileage and can just go off that.

For the guys who don't care, more power to you.

Just hitting a couple quick points after skimming that three pages of hate mail you got haha.

Welcome from Sherwood. There is a Oregon/Washington bs thread.

If you bought your truck lifted and want the speedo displayed correct(or mpg) the hyper tech unit is the fix.

Dealerships don’t regear because it’s expensive.

Yeah - I had to blast through the thread too, but see you're from Portland. I'm in Clark County. Had to drive down through Portland yesterday and actually thought I saw a truck that looked like yours.

Like most, I can't stand chrome...had enough of it on my 2008. 35's will make your speedo/odo under-report by roughly 10% from stock, and that will also affect your MPG accordingly. Hypertech (or the Rough-country version) in-line speedo calibrator is supposed to solve that - I'm currently looking at adding one to my truck because I want to know the real numbers. From my math, I actually had about 7-8k more miles on my 2008 when I traded it than the odo showed because of tire size that I ran the whole time (ODO had 297k on it).

It will fix it 100%. Just leave the cable behind the dash in case the initial adjustment is 100% accurate.
I used to have a picture of my speedo vs my bully dog readout on my last Tundra. Dash would display like 60 while the computer and bully dog would show like 52. Just estimating numbers here but you get the idea.

Coulda been me! I work in the Tigard area, drive around Hillsboro, and live in Wilsonville. So I'm all over the place...

Whoa whoa so you're telling me that my main ODO will under report for the life of the truck while I have this lift? That's both awesome, and makes me feel dirty at the same time hahaha... I guess it doesn't matter to me too much because I don't plan on ever getting rid of this beauty.

Now I better understand what JLS was talking about earlier. I thought he was just referring to my trip odo, not my main.

not because of the lift, but the over sized tires. The speedo/odo are calibrated to calculate distance off of the number of revolutions of your wheel and the factory tire size.

The factory tire (roughly 32” DIA) travels 100” in every revolution, or about 1 mile every 633 revolutions. A 35” tire will go 110” in one revolution (about 10% farther), so it only takes 576 revolutions to go a mile. So when you’ve actually gone 1 mile, your truck thinks you’ve only gone 0.91 miles based on how many times the wheel has turned. In 1000 miles, your odo will only show 910 miles. And THAT same difference is what makes your MPG calculator in the truck site such crappy mileage (well, part of it... there’s also the fact that pushing bigger/heavier tires requires more power, there’s likely some aerodynamic losses from the lift and larger tires, etc.).

as for keeping it forever... i had my ‘08 for 12 years and 297k on the odometer. That feels a little like forever to me. Planning on getting the same out of this one.

    I meant the Tires =P

That information is so helpful, thanks man. I just filled up my first tank yesterday, and I did the math after refueling 30 gals, and traveling 345 miles (according to the trip meter). The math was in line with my average mpg calculator on the dash. But now that I know the discrepancy I feel so much better! That's like a whole 1mpg extra! Woooooo!

Now I need to figure out why over inflating my tires seems to have negatively affected my mpg as well. I thought the opposite would happen lol. When my tires were run at 40psi, my average showed as 12, but I filled them to 70 with nitrogen, and I'm .5 mpg down!
