That has a plastic hose and wont withstand elements or off-roading for long. Transmission and front diff breathers are stock in the engine bay.

I did both my 3rd and 1st gen. I used the Toyota Union, 10ft of trans cooler hose, and an oil/water separator from Harbor Freight. It went smoothly and is pretty straight forward. The kits I see with less than 10ft of hose, I would be nervous about it making it to the tail light.

I have the stock breather on my tundra I read on the first page someone had checked it my question is, do I just remove the breather and do anything inside that hole or just remove it and let it be? I’m just asking in case I need to check mine considering that I don’t think the previous owner checked it or myself. Thanks in advance everyone

You just need to make sure it can move. If it doesn't twist or move up and down slightly, it is clogged.

The only question I have, if the engine bay has the 2 vents going into it from the front diff and transfer case, why can’t we just run an OEM Toyota front breather on the rear.
Or does the rear for some reason mandate the OEM one way valve?

I like the idea of the mod, and it makes sense to me, the only thing I’m questioning is, should I run the OEM 2 way breather in the rear (same part as the fronts), or run the 1 way valve that was already in the rear.

Guess I’m wondering why they use a 2 way breather for the front, and a 1 way for the rear?

They used a 2 way up front because the breather has been lifted up out of the way. If they did a 2 way in the rear it would suck in water as soon as it got submerged.

Okay, that makes sense, good point, so if I do this mod and lift it up out of the way, installing a 2 way breather, same as the front should be all I need then?

I saw guys installing filters and what not, but it made me wonder because the fronts don’t have filters, so are we really worried about a little dirty air getting in there (and I’m sure it would be very very little, if any dirty air)?

When I removed my OEM rear valve it let in a lot of air, so it makes me wonder if putting in that two way valve would put less stress on the seals so that the diff pressure will remain equalized with the ambient pressure.

Yeah that seems to be the overall consensus. Use of a Filter in order to allow for equalization of the differential pressure.

A two way breather will equalize the diff pressure as well. I did a filter because of all dust inside of the brake light cavity. It's right behind/above the rear tire and i drive through dust alot.

What kind of filter did you use? A ‘fuel’ filter, or an actual air filter meant to catch large dust?

I used a water separator for air compressor line. It's post #273, up a couple of posts.

Thinking of doing this soon - any chance you remember the bolt size for this?

Apologies, I don't. Knowing me, I found the hose clamp and bolt floating around in a box full of junk and spare parts in the garage. IIRC, that little flange provides access to both sides, so if you don't have the exact size that fits, something smaller with a nut on it should work fine. Good luck.

I did this a while back but didn't run it up to behind the taillight. I also didn't put a breather cap on the hose. Didn't figure it was necessary.

Probably not strictly necessary, but some kind of filter is cheap insurance to help keep debris out of your diff. Especially if you didn't run the breather extension to a place that gets less dust or dirt, like behind the tail light; and also if you don't change your diff fluid more than every 5 or 6 years.

Yeah I plan to get some longer hose and run it to the taillight

About how much slack did y’all leave for the fuel line to accommodate for the rear axel’s travel?

I just mimicked what the brake line was doing and haven't had any issue.

Actually had some pretty good flex going on earlier today and all is well!

I did mine today and FYI it’s a M6x1 (standard thread pitch). A 16mm length one fit perfectly for me with the hose clamp, regular, and lock washer with just a little thread sticking out of the top when tight. Great spot to put a thread, thanks Toyota
