I was looking into putting a Pop N Lock on my Christmas list when I saw this. Very nice. Thanks for the DIY write-up.

Just bought my actuator off of Amazon and plan on running the wires through the loom that’s going to the camera. I would also love to be able to add the wiring to the connector that the camera uses if it can have pins added if not I might consider swapping the type of connector to have it be a four pin connection.

    Very nice write up.

I can't do this. I would get in so much trouble.

I’ve read most of this excellent thread and am thinking of making an attempt. But first, a couple of questions: 1) after this install can you still lock/unlock the tailgate manually? And 2) any idea if this type of project will jeopardize your warranty? Thanks in advance!

You can definitely still use the key and I doubt it’ll mess with your warranty since it’s bolt on and if you use the t-taps you’re not cutting, modifying any wiring... What do others think?

The FTC has clarified that modifying a vehicle does not void your warranty, unless the dealer or manufacturer can prove that the modification caused the issue (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act).

Modifying your tailgate lock like this will likely prevent warranty repairs on your tailgate locking mechanism but would not affect the remainder of your warranty.

Did this on Saturday. Followed what pudge did with the 1/4” split loom. Once the loom was underneath the bed I added a connector next to the camera connector. Here’s the one I used. Water tight and really easy to make. Purchased at a local hardware store and was much cheaper than Amazon FB7C9E2F-B97C-4DFD-8106-C36515213D1E.jpg3604B9DF-9D30-4395-87FF-C0B9FE7009F5.jpg

Did this today. Works great. This is a great upgrade for the cost. Thanks @jaredmillerdvm and @dud13 for the detailed write up and pics. I followed @BlueBottle wiring for my 2017 but did have to reverse the colors to get it to lock/unlock properly on mine. I came in through the passenger side firewall where I’d already cut the rubber for my front camera.

Thanks for the instructions, bought all the wiring from princess auto here in Canada, installed the wiring yesterday, with a disconnect under the tailgate, total cost $30 CDN. Waiting on the actuator from Amazon,$18 CDN for 2, should be here Tuesday. Can’t wait! 6F7DA3FB-4CC3-46D3-B4FD-DDA61E6A577B.jpg 5327D03B-88B8-466F-AD72-AB20858FAA35.jpg

Finished this up today, really happy with it. All said and done was $50 CDN, the real thing would have been close to $200 shipped from Amazon. This black actuator is actually really quiet. Used a piece of hacksaw blade for the extention as suggested. Ended up wraping the split loom between the tailgate and box with electrical tape to try and keep water out, picture taken before wrapping with tape. Brought the wire in through the passengers side firewall. The wires I connected to are the red and white ones on the bottom blue connector on passengers side for my 2019 SR5 Crewmax. I have always loved doing DIY mods, Thanks for this one Tundras.com community.

    Now.....what to do next? lol

Nice job! I love the hack job, hacksaw blade that is. Great idea. This is by far one of my favorite mods. And I never would have done an actual pop n lock due to the outrageous cost.

Does anyone know what color wires to tap into for a 2016 1794? The Blue w/ silver and white w/ silver don't work and also the orangish and white for the 2018 aren't there?!?!

You should have the right wires, maybe a loose connection somewhere?

Just to add my $0.02 on here as I put this on the WDYDTY3GT, I added these little washers I found at my work and it help reduce the "THUNK" to a "thunk". Basically sounds like how your doors unlock now. I did use 2.

Now seeing the nice "Z" bracket and hacksaw blade, I'm going to have to redo it. Damn this site.

I did some sound mat. I doubt it helped with the noise. The rubber washer seems like it would be more effective

Though after going thru this, now I want to clean up my bracket and do the stiff arm. I wonder if you can buy that metal bracket somewhere? Looks like maybe a piece of garage door opener hanger would work...

Going to start the project tomorrow morning, but I had a quick question. What’s the stock gauge wire size in the truck side kick panel that I connect the wires to. I’m going to you t-taps so I wanted to make sure i had the correct t-tap size. Thanks

I'd bet the stock wire is 18 or 20 gauge, its skinny

I used the red taps, and 18guage wire, in the picture of mine, wires look the same size as the 18guage black wire I used.

Obviously I paid much more than all of you for my pop-n-lock. When I bought it it was only $85. For me it was worth it to not have to play around piecing together a kit. I commend all of you for tackling this. But $85 was a small price to pay for something that was ready to go. Maybe I’m just a little lazy. I have rigged and made my own things like this in the past, but after getting a little older, sometimes, I just don’t want to mess around LOL.

    Again good job everyone!

DIY pop n lock, 2018 LED headlights, morimoto fogs, TRD shift knob, DirtyDeeds 8"BAM exhaust, kenwood HU,JL amp, Tech12volts Tundra full speaker upgrade w/sub, Swing case, and lots of fluid film
This is one of the best DIY and frugal mods here. Easy to do, especially with the parts list in OP. One of my favorite things I have done to my truck. I have done 2 for friends too
