I'm planning on changing my oil tonight or this weekend. Haven't done it before on this truck. I got a new oem filter with a few washers thrown in by the dealer. There's a little plastic "tool" in there to to drain the filter cartridge too. I picked up 2 jugs of 0w-20 synthetic oil and a wrench for filter. Any tips or tricks here or is it pretty straight forward?

Before I get into this. Is this the correct filter cartridge wrench? 64mm?

How much oil does our truck hold? And is it really worth changing it? It's $80 at Toyota, how much $$ does that save you...

If you can it done with full synthetic, reliably then I'd go for it. I spent $55 on 2 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 oil and an oem filter.

It's more about making sure the job is done right than saving money. The most inept tech is the one who does the oil changes.

I just did it on mine and it's kinda a pain the first time.

First off, one of my bolts was missing on my skid plate. The plug on my oil drain pan was obviously tightened with an impact. The filter drain plug wouldn't come out without the filter coming with it. To top it off, I busted the shit out of my finger and am currently losing my nail.

All changes were done at the dealership prior to this one because I switched to amsoil. Mine took 8.0 quarts. I plan on changing the filter in six months and the oil again in one year.

I think I spent about $50 on oil (Mobil 1 synthetic, Walmart has 5 quart jugs cheap. My truck took about 8 quarts.), $25 on a Fumoto, and $6 on a filter. Now all of my upcoming oil changes will be easier and I know it was done right the first time. Plus, it's kinda fun to work on your truck.

My dealer has an express oil change. I stay in truck. I provide mobile 1 from Wally. Stealer provides filter.
    $18 per oil change

I'm thinking about changing my own as well, does the pro skid plate need to be removed?

Pudge 1 trick I found is to take the plastic tool provided for draining oil filter, and place it in the top of a plastic 2 quart soda bottle. Then push up into place and oil drains into soda bottle! No fuss no mess! My truck takes 8 quarts of oil with a new filter. Hope this helps you out!

Kinda the same for me.. and I don't have to worry about getting rid of the oil or the mess or anything.. also I can't change the oil anyways.. maybe if I was good at it and quick I might have a different perspective but w/3 to each their own right
