    Alright, so the only thing I'm not sure of is when to put in the crush sleeve. Do I have to install the crush sleeve the first time I am getting a preliminary pinion preload? Can I get pinion preload without the crush sleeve, and then do the crush sleeve only at the very last - after pinion depth, backlash, and proper pattern are established? Thanks.

    I've got to ask... have you done this before? Because this isn't really the mod that you want to figure out through here or YouTube. I pulled my third member out and had the gears and Auburn added paying only $300 or $350 for it to be professionally installed.... then I reinstalled the third member.

    No crush sleeve on the 10.5”, uses a solid spacer and shim(s).

    I've rebuilt a Ford 8.8, the only thing I didn't do was re-set the pinion gear.

    I'll go on to say that's the point of forums like this, threads like this, (proper) youtube videos, and asking questions...is to make sure it's done correctly.

    True... but everyone has different skill levels...I don't know yours and you don't know mine.... just making sure that someone who has zero mechanical skills and next to no tools on hand can think they can do this. If you're capable then clearly not directed badly towards you.

    @Vizsla nailed it already. It's a solid pinion spacer on the 10.5" rear so no worry there for you. Also since you're not regearing I would honestly first only pull the carrier and swap your ring gear over to the new carrier, set backlash, and take a pattern to see how close pinion depth is. You may get away without touching the pinion and leave the seal and whole shebang in place. I've also heard that used gear patterns are difficult to read, I've only done this one new set so I'm certainly no expert but post em up!

    Agreed. Thanks for reaffirming my disclaimer. This is NOT a typical driveway two beer evening job. 95% of people on this forum should probably leave it up to the professionals but if you're comfortable with the risks by all means go at it.

    The only reason I'm considering doing the pinion is to replace the bearings. The truck has 100k so I figure if I'm in there, may as well. Plus, knowing that I won't be trashing out a sleeve, or multiple sleeves, is a relief.

    I’m going to remove the grip-pro and install an e-locker myself. This thread mostly, and Zuk walking through my rebuild has me confident enough to tackle it. Thanks! @blackoutt

    Some of us wanted the e locker but it wasn't available yet so we ran our regears on Auburn or Powertrax carriers for the time being. I'll be doing the same eventually but going to see how long until I NEED a locker.

    Right on. Hopefully this doesn't take too much of a detour from this thread, but were you guys happy with these LSDs? I'm getting ready to install a Powertrax, as I don't need a true locker. I chose the Powertrax due to its mechanical engagement vs clutches.

    Not enough true testing in on mine yet. I installed it, we had a baby and didn't take too many wheeling trips or put too many miles on the truck last year, eff 2020! Making plans to change that this year. I also hear that the clutch style wear out quickly, in which case it becomes a stock open diff again. In my 4runner that was always sufficient for our travels with atrac making up the difference so maybe I'll never notice the difference.

    The only things I've noticed so far is that I have to jack up the whole rear to spin a tire, and it sucks in snow in 2wd, hardly useful info.

    Haven’t had the grip-pro long enough to comment on reliability. It is very aggressive, chirps the tires a good bit on the street. Finding non synthetic gear oil with no friction modifier added was difficult locally, only generic no name available. Snow and ice might be a fun time.
