Superhero movies are the only original thing that Hollywood can come up with. Everything else is a remake or a Tyler Perry movie. Hell, we've had 6 SpiderMan movies with 3 different actors in the last 17 years. The reason they're getting made it because of the marketing. Toys, T-shirts, video games, coffee mugs, hats, extra strength condoms, etc. The movie is just a 2-3 hour advertisement for a product. It's a multi-billion dollar industry.

And your superhero movie formula is the same formula as any action movie or every James Bond movie. And they've been making those since the 1960's.

I'm a big Clive Cussler fan and the Dirk Pitt novels. That would be cool if they did.

Nobody ever claimed Hollywood was made up of original, intelligent people. ;)

I agree my formula is pretty vanilla in the action movie genre, but I find that superhero movies in particular follow it even more rigidly. I find the recent superhero movies predictable in the extreme, to the point where I annoy my girlfriend because I'll tell her what's going to happen...and I do it the first time I watch the movie. In every movie Hulk smashes, Iron Man makes witty remarks and flies around (he's my personal favorite btw), Thor does the Neanderthal with a heart and a big hammer thing, Capt America is righteous and all that is right with America etc.

You bring up James Bond. I'll give you that it's a pretty basic plot. However, there's always some new surprise or gadget or witty way he escapes the bad guys and woos the girls. Unlike superhero movies, the first time I watched them I was never totally sure exactly what conundrum he'd get into or what nifty gadgets he'd come up with.

Don't get me wrong, I'll watch superhero movies and enjoy the mindless entertainment. I just feel they're over done. I just prefer movies with a few more twists, turns, backstories, and deeper story lines.

I'm big into the Oregon Files. Part of me wants to see a series made from those books, but the other part of me knows they'd cock it up.

Sahara was a great book. The movie was shit, and didn’t make money, so don’t hold your breath for more.
As for your other comments, “nothing but superhero movies” is exaggerated a little. Hundreds of movies are released each year, with maybe five or so being superhero movies. These movies are making ridiculous money. I don’t think any of them have been a flop.

In addition, you have two studios making superhero movies now. Both of those are also making a lot of other movies also. None of the other studios are really making them at all. Honestly, it should be pretty easy to avoid these movies you’re not fond of.

PS: The whole telling your girlfriend what is going to happen, the “first time you watch a movie”....the only thing more douchey than doing that is bragging about it.

Man, there’s a few authors I quit reading because of this. Cussler, James Patterson, etc.
They get lazy. Short chapters, bigger font. James Patterson started kicking out a dozen books a year this way.

Lol. Yeah, i avoid the ones i dont want to watch. Thank god for torrents. Yes, there's other movies out there. My point was it seems like an inordinate amount of superhero movies are being made all at once.

As for being douchey...whatever man. As if you dont ever tease your wife. I dont ruin every movie for her. If i was a douche, she'd have left long ago. In my books a guy teasing his wife is less douchey than another guy making assumptions about him.

Didn’t mean to offend you. I apologize. I made no assumptions at all about you or anything else. I only remarked on your actions, which you informed me of. Once again, nothing I said indicated assumption.

That said, it was unnecessary and didn’t contribute to the discussion. For that, I apologize.

I recommend anything by Will James or Zane Grey. Strawberry Roan is a good start.

Apology accepted, no offense taken. I didn't word myself as clear as I could have. For that I apologize.

Now, back to arguing about whether or not they're making too many superhero movies!!

Joon I can't justifiably give any review because I haven't seen it. From what ive read it's not getting a lot of love. I just thought the Force Awakens stole to much from episodes 4&5, and to many unrealistic scenes. I'm not going to see it at a theater, but will watch it when it hits the stream. Have you seen it yet?

Just seems like every Star Wars triology follows the exact same formula.

1-3 was almost a complete copy of 4-5, (aside from 3) and so far, 7-9 seems to be following suit.

No. Haven’t seen it yet... but I will. I’ve seen every one since Empire Strikes Back in the theater so I can’t break the streak. I thought The Force Awakens and Rogue 1 was the exact same movie with different characters.

Gotta agree with you on that one.

Never was a big Star Wars fan, but gotta say episode 3 was kick ass (and with Hayden Christensen....that’s saying a lot LOL)
Man the empire strikes back was just a part of the original triology....they all kick ass IMO.

Guess what I’m more pissed off about is the lack of creativity and story writing in today’s cinemas. Seems like every single movie out there is either a reboot or a remake and every single plot, synopsis, twist, etc is some watered down, recycled, regurgitated shit that has some kind of political aim and/or completely lacking of sustenance.

Just aren’t any surprises or “HOLY SHIT THAT JUST HAPPENED” moments. It’s all “turn your brain off and enjoy (which is fun in certain movies a la TMNT 2016 and Justice League) I love fun movies, but come on!! Give me the depth....intensity....classical emotion invoked by kick ass movies like Godather, Rocky, Scarface, etc. not some plastered crap prettied up by countless women sporting thongs (or lack therof) and every other word has to be “fuck” further illustrating the diversity of the word as often and as stupidly as possible.

    Wow.....that was a rant.

I’ll just go ahead and pop another beer, calm down and resume watching “the ranch”

    Good night good sir. LOL

I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Saw the movie yesterday, and I’m really torn. About a third brilliant, a third horrible, and the other third was in between.
There were a couple of amazing moments. There was at least one scene that was just stupid as could be.
Though I did enjoy the movie, I’m not sure I would have if I wasn’t such a fan. The movie on it’s own failed to really make me care about any of the characters. The major sub plot for the resistance was stupid and drawn out.

The more I read what I wrote, the more it sounds like I hated it. I didn’t but damn there was just a lot of wasted and unnecessary stuff in the plot.

I am a huge Star Wars fan myself! I am still torn about this last movie. I loved parts of it, could not stand parts, and thought that others were a waste of film. This was the first one that I felt could not stand on its own. The others have all felt to me as being part of something bigger but at the same time could stand alone as a great movie. I now wonder what the new trilogy will hold as they are going to have this same director.
